Hi everyone
I have a questions. Can i make a cluster on with two different windows servers. First server have installed a windows server 2012 standard. Second have windows server 2012 r2. When I run a failover cluster validation i get information: the operating system version is not the same for all of the servers. Someone could tell me is that possible to install cluster on this servers ??

Hi GluklichM.
You have to have the same version of OS installed on all servers which are going to be in the Cluster.

Just an FYI ... Starting with the next version of Windows Server, Microsoft will enable the ability to perform a rolling upgrade of the operating system. It is not recommended to run the cluster in this mode for an extended period of time, but it does allow for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server .next to coexist during the upgrade.

Hi there.
Following the string of this conversation, I would like to know if, I add a new node with different OS (W2016) that the current ones in the cluster (W2012), and therefore I have my cluster in "Mixed-OS-Mode", my question is: During this stage, my cluster becomes out of support from MS? Assuming that the upgrade takes months, for example.
Thanks in advance.

Mixed-mode works for Windows Server 2012 R2 (not 2012) and Windows Server 2016.
No, it is not out of support, though the longer you leave the configuration in a mixed mode, the higher the probability is that something will go wrong. Microsoft recommends that the mixed mode stage be less than a month.
Test your upgrade in a lab environment before attempting it on the production system. That way you can ensure you have the process worked out and have identified potential issues and are able to implement mitigations. If you do not test it in a lab first, you have simply turned your production cluster into a lab. And the expectation is that things will break in a lab. Not the sort of thing you want to implement for a highly available business application solution.

This string was marked as answered five years ago. You have a new issue, though it is related to this topic. You should open a new question post and provide details about your configuration and the steps you took. Please provide any error messages, too.
