Moving Visual Studio License To Another Computer

Question

Saturday, September 30, 2017 8:25 PM

I'm in a deadline rush. The new developer laptop won't arrive for me for a week. In the interim, I need to install Visual Studio Pro 2017 on one laptop temporarily. When the new computer arrives, I can then uninstall it from the old laptop and install it on the new laptop.

Will I have a license issue or is it as easy as uninstalling on one laptop and installing on a new laptop?

Hi Volomike,

Thanks for posting here.

>>>Will I have a license issue or is it as easy as uninstalling on one laptop and installing on a new laptop?

No, you will not have license issue. That because Visual Studio licensing is per user not per machine. You can have one installation on your old laptop and another on your new laptop as long as they are both used by you only.

Here's Microsoft's whitepaper on licensing.

Besides, below is an excerpt from the mentioned Whitepaper:

"The licensed user can install and use the software on any number of devices. The software can be installed and used on your devices at work, at home, at school, and even on devices at a customer’s office or on dedicated hardware hosted by a 3 rd party. Most subscriber software can also be run in Microsoft Azure VMs. However, the software is otherwise not licensed for use in production environments. "****

Hope this help you.****
