Can't edit chart data in Powerpoint 2016

Question

Thursday, November 23, 2017 5:31 PM | 2 votes

Hello. Can anyone help me with this?

I have the Microsoft Office Professional 2016 and Powerpoint does not let me edit the data of any chart, except when it is brand new. I can insert a new chart and it will appear with the pop-up window where the data is introduced, but after I close this window there is no way to bring it up again.

When I try to edit the chart data, Powerpoint doesn't send any error notice, it just sits there as nothing had happened.

I did uninstall and reinstall Office in an attempt to solve the problem.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I had this problem but managed to fix it. A system restore is not required.

It seems that somehow McAfee antivirus, which came preinstalled with the machine with a trial license, was somehow interfering with the process (there must be a conflict with the latest windows update). I removed McAfee and everything is working again.

Hi Salvadorius,

>> When I try to edit the chart data, Powerpoint doesn't send any error notice, it just sits there as nothing had happened.

How did you try to edit the chart data? Generally, to edit data of the chart, please select the chart, right click or go to Design ribbon to choose Edit Data > Edit Data:

If the issue persists, please try the following steps and check the result:

1. Exist PowerPoint and Excel, press Win + R.
2. Type "REGSVR32 ole32.dll" in the open box, press Enter:

3. Should get a prompt saying “DllRegisterServer in ole32.dll succeeded”.

Hope this can be helpful.

Best regards,
Yuki Sun

Hi Yuki.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I edit the data the way you described it.

I did run "REGSVR32 ole32.dll", the computer prompted "DllRegisterServer in ole32.dll succeeded” but the problem persists.

Thank you again for your help,
Salvadorius

Hi Salvadorius,

Please try to open Excel, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings... > File Block Settings, click the restore to defaults button and check if there will be any improvement:

I have the exact same problem. None of the suggestions worked. Office has been removed & reinstalled. I even reinstalled Windows. The problem manifested itself after a big Windows 10 update, so they might be related.

I have the same problem as well.

Hi all,

Thanks for reporting the issue.

Could you please collect the detailed build number of both Windows and Office then we can do further research on this?

Best regards,
Yuki Sun

Hi please see the following.  It is for 2010, but still relevant, particularly the section regarding editing data that was not imported or created in PP.

Further reading, if its not in need of an updated link then it seems to be a bug:

From the following: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_powerpoint-mso_win10-mso_2016/powerpoint-2016-chart-data-reverting-to-old-data/cbb61d35-f212-4dae-a312-0d723d577211

I had this problem too. I found a solution going forward, but had to remake my old charts. If you input the data by accessing it through the select data option on the right drop down menu it will not save properly. If you right click the graph and select
edit data the changes seem to save properly. I do not know if their is a way to retrieve the improperly saved data.

Hey,

We have the same situation on notebook in the office.

win 16299.64
office365 16.0.8625.2121

EDIT: Meanwhile that changed to office365 business version 1710 (build: 8625.2139)

After resetting Windows to default and reinstalling the Office it was working for a day but the update changed it.

Would appreciate some solution ;)

Hello Yuki, please chime in on this when you have a moment.  There are several with the same issue, and I think it is a bug with the recent office update.

Thanks

Hi Salvadorius,

According to the version information provided above, it seems that the issue most likely occurrs to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1709, Build 16299). I'll help submit this using our internal way.

Great to see that the issue has been resolved by reverting to Windows and thanks for sharing!

By the way, do you mind helping mark your post above as answer so that others who might encounter a similar issue can more easily find the useful information?

Thanks for your understanding and support.

Hi Yuki

Same problem here with Windows 10 Home version 1709. Could you share a link to download Windows 10 Version 1703 along with instructions to install / overwrite the version with a bug?

Thank you.

Hi,

A few people in my office recently updated our Windows to 10.0.16299 and now none of us can create a chart in Powerpoint then edit that data, or edit the data of a previous chart. This happens across Powerpoint versions 1710 and 1711. Some who have not yet updated their Windows do not experience this problem, so it's definitely related to that.

Will there be any other solution to this other than completely reinstalling Windows?

Thanks,

Jack

Just wanted to add to this thread.  I began having the same issues (editing data in PowerPoint Charts) after my latest large Windows update.  I took the latest suggestion in removing/uninstalling the new McAffee software and the PowerPoint functionality has been restored.  This is an easier fix than having to reinstall a previous version of Windows.

Hope this helps others, I know it was a headache for me for a few days.

Removing McAfee also worked for me.

Friday, February 2, 2018 4:36 PM

The issue is McAfee Web Advisor.  I uninstalled that and the problem went away.  I was told McAfee, or any outside antivirus software, is unnecessary with Windows 10 anyways.

Apparently Microsoft can't post a solution themselves b/c it involves blaming another company.  But this appears to be affecting many people so hopefully the solution can stay up.

Apparently.

I don't have McAffee and have the same problem. I am running Windows 10 version 1803. This is extremely frustrating and is killing my timelines!

I have tried everything except re-installs as I do not have time or the ability to that on my work machines. Is there a real solution?

Wednesday, September 12, 2018 7:21 AM

Dear,

Most of the cases it happens for some specific antivirus or web protection. If you are using McAfee web security, please uninstall it. Then uninstall Office and clear the registry values related to office. Reboot the PC and install the office. It will be running smoothly.

Thanks,

This only happens in Windows 10. I am at work and switched to a Windows 7 PC and it worked. So something that the Microsoft team should look into.
