SharePoint 2013 Calendar Overlay: Unable to find specified web in the given URL -

I am trying to overlay 2 calendars from 2 hosted site collections withing the same web application. I can overlay 2 calendars within the one site collection, but when i try to overlay across site collections, i receive this error: Unable to find specified web in the given URL -. 

Site collection1: https://site1.shp.mysite.com

Site Collection2: https://site2.shp.mysite.com

Can this be done?

Yes, it should be possible. Calendar Overlay in SharePoint works well for site collections in the same web application, but not for across web applications.
