Question

On a new Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit computer, I have installed Office 2007. When I attempt to save documents to a mapped network drive on a peer network (saving to a Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit computer), I have abnormally long save times. However, when I attempt to save documents to my computer, I have no issues. I do not have any issues when opening the files over the mapped drive.
Turning off the third-party Bullguard Internet Security antivirus and firewall makes no difference. Setting as an exception the excluded mapped drive folder makes no difference either.
I have disconnected the mapped drive and re-mapped the network drive, but this makes no difference.
I had no problem with the same software on a prior computer running the same Office 2007 version. Another computer on the network has no issues either.
Please advise how to speed up the saved documents (Word, Excel).

With the help of Microsoft Tech Support, I was able to determine that the problem is caused by an incompatibility between the Bullguard Anti-virus Scan plugin on the server computer. Bullguard apparently has an issue with Windows 8.1 computers on a peer network running Microsoft Office (at least with Office 2007 and newly installed Office 2013), as opposed to Windows 7 computers on the same network.
Bullguard recommended that I exclude Office folders from scanning.
AbiWord and LibreOffice had no such issues being saved over the network.

Hi,
As the slow to save files issue, please try the suggestion below to modify the registry:
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry,
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry
To start the Registry Editor, press Win + R, type "regedit.exe" in the blank box, press Enter. Then add the following registry key to the machine:
[Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options]
"DisableRobustifiedUNC"=Dword:00000001
[Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options]
"DisableRobustifiedUNC"=Dword:00000001
I hope this can help.

Before I try this registry editing, can you explain what the purpose of the editing is and what it is designed to fix? I have installed this version of Office 2007 Small Business (upgrade from XP) on multiple computers in the past and have not had any issues like this, so I'm hesitant to start making changes to the registry on a new computer installation.
I have also tried to save a document to a Windows 7 Ultimate computer on the network (not mapped) and got the same result with an extra long save.
It appears that there is some issue with saving documents over a network.
Thanks.

Robustified UNC is an architectural change made in Office 2007 to improve performance and responsiveness when working with UNC files, especially over latent or slow networks. When Office opens a UNC file the application downloads the entire file at once and then works locally against a local copy of the file. When the user saves the document the application copies the file back across the network.
Benefits of Robustified UNC include:
•Robustness when working with network files where the network connection is not stable or the connection could be lost. Because the file is local, the application will not fail unexpectedly when it requires portions of the file after having initially loaded the file (we have contents in the file that are delay loaded).
•When a file is open and the machine is put into sleep. Robustified UNC handles the proper disconnects from the remote file and it will attempt to re-establish ownership of the file once the machine resumes from sleep.
Hope it helps.

Changing the registry did not work. There was no such registry entry of "Options" for Excel.
Disabling Robustified UNC seems counterproductive to fix the problem.
There may be a compatibly problem between Windows 8.1 and Office 2007 Small Business Edition.
Please advise how to fix this problem. Thanks.
