Can connect to shared printer. error 0x00000709

Question

We have 2 network printers that are installed on Server 2019. We added them using add local printer to a standard tcp/ip port and shared them. When trying to connect to these printers from a workstation through a share by going to \servername\printer we get error 0x00000709.  I tried the steps in this article which didn't resolve the issue. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/error-0x00000709-try-connect-printer-windows-10

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

This issue has been resolved. I can't explain why we were not able to connect VIA IP address but the issue was resolved following this. https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/2iojmw/followup_to_my_print_server_fail_thread/

The server name was too long.

Hi,

Please try to access the shared printer via IP address instead of UNC patch and check the result:

  1. Press shortcut keys: Win + R to open Run box, enter printers IP address.
  2. Click on the shared printers from the result list. Connect to that printer.

Besides, please confirm that if "Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709)" error when you use a CNAME record for a print server in Windows Server 2008 R2 is helpful:

Accessed the shared printer VIA \192.168.10.4\printer and we get the same 0x00000709 error. So it seems the steps in that KB wouldn't apply here.
