How to create a forward zone in Windows DNS

Question

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 12:32 AM

We have Windows 2008 AD servers doing internal DNS.  I want to set up a per-domain forwarding type configuration (requests for domain "chet.com" are forward to name server with IP xx.xx.xx.xx).  From my Windows XP MMC plugin I can define forwarders for a domain "chet.com" and it works fine.

However, from the Windows 7 or Windows 2008 DNS snap-in, I don't see these changes reflected nor any way to configure this sort of thing.

Is there some other way to set this up using the newer tools, or is this something I shouldn't be doing?  As I said, it seems to work just fine... I just can't manage the configuration from the newer tools.

Thanks.

IN 2008 Conditional forwarders are configured just like the DNS zones.  When opening the DNS MMC you should see Forward, Reverse, and Conditional folders (or something to that effect).  Select the Conditional (3rd down) to configure.

Hi Ray,

In addtition to Gunner's suggestion, which was straight forward, below are two links showing how to create a Condititional Forwarder, including a video. It's the same in Windows 2008 and Windows 2003.

Create conditional forwarder and replicate all DNS server in forest:

How to Configure Conditional Forwarders in Windows Server 2008

Now if the problem is simply the snap-ins, are you saying you are not seeing the changes you made on your console reflected on the actual DNS servers? If so, how many DC/DNS servers do you have, and is the console focused on the one making changes on that you checked?

Which tools did you install, the RSAT Tools?

If the UAC is active on your workstation, did you open the DNS console using the "Run As Adminstrator?"

Thanks guys.  I'm actually a Unix/BIND admin, but was delving into the world of Windows DNS briefly and was unfamiliar with the changes in the snap-in management tools between XP and 7/2008.  I think the suggestions above will work fine!

Hi Ray,

I'm glad to hear we were able to help! And the Windows DNS world is a little different then BIND, but you will find most of DNS functionality is pretty much (almost) the same!

Cheers!
