Column ordering not working

Question

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 2:53 PM

Anyone have any idea why my column ordering would not be working?

It doesn't work in any of my site collections, on any library or list.

Thanks in advance.

Where are the columns you are trying to order?

If you are trying to order the columns in a view, then you have to modify the view, as others have said.  Remember to click the Save button.

If you are trying to order the columns in the Display/Edit/New forms, and your list does not use managed content types, then you use the link at the bottom of the column list in the List Settings page.

If you are trying to order the columns in the Display/Edit/New forms, and your list does use managed content types, then go to List Settings, then click on the content type, then you'll find the link to reorder the columns.  Alternatively, you can make the change at the site level by modifying the content type definition.

Could you explain more? Is it a list, with more than 1 columns? Are any of the columns indexed?

Also - are you looking at the correct view?

We have an inventory list, for example, nothing indexed, and I'm trying to change the Vendor List to column 3 and the PO# to column 4 - basically just reverse the order that they are currently - and it will not let me reorder them.  I can choose the numbers from the drop-down, but when I view the list, the old column ordering remains.

That occurs for every list, every forms library, every document library, etc.

It used to work fine, but lately - just problems, and I have no idea what would have changed or what is responsible for making that work correctly.

We are using default views.

I cannot reproduce this on any of my view pages such as AllItems.aspx. When i change the column order in view defintion, i see the effect on view page immediately.

However, what you describe is by design if you put the List View Web Part on a web part page. After the view is modified, you have to modify the List View Web Part on the web part and select the view again so that the modification will show on the web part page.

You haven't given us the background details of what you're doing.  You only said "column ordering," but then your referred to views. Views don't have "column ordering" or at least not the actual SharePoint term for "column ordering."  Column ordering refers to the order in which the fields are presented when creating, editing, or viewing an item individually (New, Edit, Disp forms).  There is a link in the list settings that actually says "Column Ordering," and this changes the order of the fields in the forms.  This feature also has dropdowns for the columns where you choose the position.  Then, in the actual view settings, you can set the order of the columns, but there isn't a link that says "column ordering."  I only mention this in case you got confused between the two and because you never really told us what you were doing exactly.

Also, is this just a regular view page where it's not working?  Are you truly changing the settings of a view then browsing to that view directly, and you see that view's name in the view selecdtor?

If everything I wrote is kosher, and you're not confusing any of these things, then I would say you have a major corruption with the system if this occurs on every site.

Hei,

Do you facing any type of Exception while creating the view. Actually if you add the list in other page as webpart and there after you change in the same view of the list then you have to again modify the webpart and set the view again in the page where you added the List webpart
