so on the LAN we use \domain.local\namespace for my docs and a shared folder. My docs are made available off line, shared docs are not.
servers are 2012r2 and 2016 and clients are windows 7 to windows 10.
Problem:
occasionally we gets complaints from users who can't use DFSN path to the shared folder, they have to use the UNC path i.e., \servername\share etc. We see this on the LAN and over VPN and haven't been able to figure it out.
Any ideas?

Do you mean some user couldn't access by dfs namespace?
May I ask what's the error message when user unable to access dfs namespace?
And does the problem happen randomly?
According to your description, you configure offline files on target computer? If so, test to disable the offline file feature temporarily on the problematic client then check the results.
Open control panel - open 'sync center' DIsable offline files. Reboot.
In addition, please follow the guide to troubleshooting FSN namespace access failure problem.

so are you saying that offline is causing this; we use this feature on all laptops company wide.
thanks for the link.
its hard to troubleshoot with a remote user on this when others are working just fine. I was hoping that someone had come across the same description.

Hi,
Since for random issue, we couldn't reproduce it. It is difficult to do troubleshooting for such issue.
You mentioned that, you have enable offline file settings, so for a test, when the problem happens you could disable the offline file feature temporarily on the problematic client then check the results.
