Question

So, I have this error message when trying to convert a newly created local account to a Microsoft account. I had to delete my original account due to other issues, and I've tried removing all trace of my email in the registry, removed the device from the Microsoft live website as well as Microsoft store and still no go. Am really pulling my hair out with this one. Anything else I can try other than wiping the PC completely?

Hi Jordan,
Please open Computer management and locate to Users as below, fine if any other account besides Default, administrator, guest and yourself: let's find if there is any hidden account there. If so, right click the un-hide it and login to check if there is any assocciation.

Hello Jordan Ting,
You should check if the account still exists under the user profiles.
1. Open your explorer
2. Right click This PC > Properties
3. Under the advanced tab > User Settings > Settings
4. Check if the profile still exists there, if so remove it and try again.

Hi,
Is there any other user account created on this PC?
Please check under Advanced system settings: if there is any other besides build-in administrator and yourself, highlight it and click Delete, then try again.

This snap-in is not visible.
I tried to reach it by runing netplwiz through Run (Win + R), going to advanced tab and clicking advanced button.
I get to lusrmgr with the message: "This snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows 10."
I have removed all account, and no family account are visible.

Thanks. I had the same issue, and none of the above steps helped.

This sort of worked. From netplwiz I added the user that it thought already existed, using his microsoft account e-mail address. I then deleted it. I then logged back into his local account and was able to associate his microsoft account with his local account without it saying that he was already here.

If you use a local account on Windows 10, you might still use the Microsoft account for some applications. Try checking the following applications to see if they are signed in. If so, sign out of the application and try again. You might need to log out of the desktop again.
- Skype
- Minecraft Windows 10 version
- XboxLive
- OneDrive
- Windows Security > Account Protection
