stop windows from removing unused icons

Question

Wednesday, November 29, 2017 5:46 PM

Hi,

I'm running windows 10 (versio 1709) enterprise.

I'm running some apps that are hosted on a google (encrypted) drive mapped as a windows drive, unfortunately after some while windows removes those app icons.

For ex. an app icons on the taskbar points to: x:\google drive\encrypted_drive\apps\x1.exe etc.

Is there anyway to stop windows 10 to remove unused icons?

Thanks a lot!

Didier

Disappearing network icons/shortcuts on your desktop can be caused by the Windows maintenance task, which “helpfully” removes desktop icons which it deems “unused”.

The solution is to turn it off in Control Panel->Troubleshooting.  Click “Change Settings” on the left and turn Computer Maintenance "off".

Hi Didier,

Did this issue only occur for the taskbar icon that point to x:\google drive\encrypted_drive\apps\x1.exe?

Generally, Windows won't remove the taskbar icons although they are unused.

I suspect if the icon is disappear due to your google drive is not stable due to network or other reasons.

Is there any way to keep all the useful and intelligent tasks and remove the epic brain cramp task only?

I have VPN users having to spend too much time restoring icons that should not have been deleted in the first place.
