VPN disconnects internet connection

Question

Monday, February 26, 2018 7:54 PM

When I use the VPN to connect to my office, my internet connection gets disconnected. This was done at my work place for security reasons.

In my pc, I have 2 networks cards. One ethernet and one wifi. I have connected to the internet using both these cards. I thought with this setting, the vpn will use one internet and leave the other untouched. But the moment vpn connects, it disconnects internet on both network cards. Only difference is that both cards connect to the internet by using the same modem / router that gives me internet.

Is there a way to force the vpn to use one connection and use the second one to keep the internet live?

You should check on the routes which are pushed when you are connected through VPN: http://techgenix.com/making-sense-windows-routing-tables/

You may be able to fix that by tweaking the routes: http://www.pearsonitcertification.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1272743&seqNum=3

Hi

And where goes security if you allow internet while VPN is connected?

I have no idea. It's something our IT department decided. We have no input.

Try this,  open network status, then click on change adapter options. Right click on your VPN connection click on Properties, next Networking tab, next click on Internet Protocol Version 4, then properties again.  Next click on Advanced, make sure Use default gateway on remote network is unchecked. IT department forces their gateway with their firewall rules.

Thanks bud, didn't think of checking the default gateway as the vpn was trying to use this & disconnecting my connection. Initially I was putting the blame on the antivirus/firewall programs I had running on a new laptop.

I have seen this response on multiple threads now. I am on windows 10 but when i navigate to the advanced section of the IPV4 properties window i never see Use default gateway on remote network anywhere? is this only a feature on widows 7?

i think you are from iran. when you are in the advanced tab go to WINS tab and enable netBIOS over TCP/IP. that'll probably fix it

on IPv4 properties click Advanced and then clear flag on use default gateway. This should fix your problem.

Just wanted to thank you Mel_W as your advise sorted my problem. When i was connecting to VPN on my work laptop i was instantly being kicked out of my home WIFI connection, once i have unchecked default gateway its working perfectly. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

This didn't work for me. In my vpn (Cisco) properties, I don't have default gateway. So I went into the WINS tab and selected Enable NetBIOS over TCP/Ip

Still no success. I have a windows 10 pc.

Also I have 2 network cars and they are connected to 2 different WIFI (2G and 5G)
