"Let Windows manage my default printer" disable via GPO

Question

Friday, March 24, 2017 4:54 PM

We have a server 2012 R2 domain here and I have already pushed out this reg key but it does not turn off that setting

"HKEY_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\LegacyDefaultPrinterMode Dword: 0×00000001"

What else can I try?

Hi,

I have done this test on my lab machine: Windows 2012R2 domain and Windows 10 14393.953 client.

This registry entry works fine from domain pushing on Windows 10 client with roaming user profile.

Check if you GPP configuration is as below:

Note: Please remember confirm your Windows 10 is 1607 build and import the ADMX for Windows 10 to Windows Server 2012.

After confirming it's fine, sign in with the domain user account on Window 10 client to check the result.

If the issue persists, run gpresult /h gpreport.html in command prompt with administrator. And then copy it from %WinDir%\System32.

If you don't know how to view it, upload this log file to OneDrive for analysis.

Ah I think that's what I am missing. I never imported the ADMX files for Win 10 onto Server 2012 R2. Let me give that a shot.

Now the templates for win 10 have been imported, but do I need to adjust anything on the reg setting or leave it as is? Also does it matter I am deploying a reg key HKEY_CURRENT_USER under Computer Configuration as opposed to User Configuration or that does not matter?

It's still not working. GPO applied, ADMX templates imported into the server. What else can I try?

I have the Gpreport.html file. How can I securely send it to you?

Just upload it to OneDrive and share the link here.

Can I email it you? I don't want to share it publicly.

Hello,

you should enable the following group policy setting:

"Turn off Windows default printer management" (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Printers\:

Here is a screenshot form one of the workstations that shows the GPO is applied but last I checked it was not working still

That's normal, you must use the following settings in your GPO:
User Configuration => Administrative Templates => Control Panel => Printers => Turn off Windows default printer management.

If you really want to change this settings by setting the registry key (not recommended), you must import the key via the "User Configuration" side and not via the "Computer Configuration" (that's why nothing happens, based on your screenshot, you are creating the key via the Computer Configuration of your GPO)

Ah makes sense. Forgot it's user regkey. Not sure how I missed that

Seems like I dont have "User Configuration => Administrative Templates => Control Panel => Printers => Turn off Windows default printer management." Available even though I installed the ADMX templates for win 10 already.

What's your current build of Windows 10?

Turn off Windows default printer management exists either Windows 10 1607 or Windows 10 1703.

Please download the latest Windows 10 1703 ADMX file and then follow this steps to import it to your Windows Server 2012R2.

Ah ok thanks for that info. One last question. I have already made the central store within the Sysvol folder and copied the previous build of windows 10 updates in there but MS released a new set for the Win 10 creators update. When i go to copy the ADMX, ADML. and en-US folder in there there are obviously some files it wants to overwrite. Can I just choose to replace them?

Also are the ADMX file cumulative?

FYI I chose to overwrite existing files and it's now working properly. The option is there in the GPO

Hmm seems like after applying the most recent ADMX templates to the server, I now have this error. Any ideas?

  1. Delete the LocationProviderADM.admx and LocationProviderADM.adml files from the central store.
  2. Rename Microsoft-Windows-Geolocation-WLPAdm.admx as LocationProviderADM.admx.
  3. Rename Microsoft-Windows-Geolocation-WLPAdm.adml as LocationProviderADM.adml.

I'm just curious Why is the icon different?

Monday, February 12, 2018 4:45 PM

Alon.or, the down arrow means it's actually a preference. See the explanation here:
