Unable to insert objects in Word 2016

Question

Thursday, December 3, 2015 8:45 AM

Hi all,

Since installing Office 2016 I am unable to insert certain Objects within Word, I am trying to add an HTM file and display it as an icon (Insert > Object > Create from File > Display as icon), however I get the error message:

"The program used to create this object is htmlfile. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install htmlfile or ensure that any dialog boxes in htmlfile are closed."

Has anyone else encountered this, and is there a known fix?

Regards

Carl

Hi Carl,

I suppose that your Office 2016 installation is corrupted. Would you like to re-install it if possible?

Hi,

As far as I know, this issue could occur if *.HTM\.HTML registry keys are corrupt or if they have incorrect values.

Back up and delete the following registry keys for *.HTM and *.HTML, restart PC and try to insert HTML files in Word.

Hi Carl,

OK, have you tried to start Word in safe mode and test this issue? The third-party add-in also might be a reason.

Then, we also can repair Office 2016 to check it is helpful.

I have the same problem. Running Office 365 small business premium edition with all latest updates. Also tried the proposed registry trick. after reboot it still shows (default) "htmlfile" for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htm and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html

...and the error still the same - The program used to create this object is htmlfile. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install htmlfile or ensure that any dialog boxes in htmlfile are closed."

when trying to insert HTML file into blank Word document.

I was just able to solve this same problem by changing my default program for web browsing to Internet Explorer (was previously set to Microsoft Edge by default on a new computer) and ensuring that it also changed the default program for .htm and .html files, then restarting the Word program before I tried inserting the picture as an object again.
