Question

I am working on a project and recently updated my VS from 2015 to 2017. My existing reports execute well but when I try to open the RDLC file in Visual Studio to modify, I get an XML version of it. I need to open it in Design mode to make some modifications in it. I tried right click, open with but did not find any Report Designer in there to open it. All I found is a list of XML and HTML openers. Please help me how to modify this. Either download something or do any modification.
Please help me in this.
Regards, Deepak

Hi Deepak,
Welcome to MSDN forum.
Please update visual studio 2017 to the latest version and then install SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) for visual studio 2017, The preview version of SSDT for Visual Studio 2017 (15.3.0 preview) is now available. This release introduces a standalone web installation experience for SQL Server Database, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services projects in Visual Studio 2017 15.3 or later. After this, going to Tools>Extensions and Update, installing Microsoft Rdlc Report Designer for Visual Studio.
Best regards,
Joyce

Hi. May be its to late for mi Aswer, but other people can read my answer. This link have the solution.
You are missing Report Template in visual studio
Got to Control Panel->Programs->Programs and Features.
Select you Visual Studio Version, right click and 'Change'.
The Visual Studio Setup splashscreen should appear, Click on Modify at the bottom left, and then under 'Windows and Web Development' select Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools. The Reporting option should then appear in your installed updates. source: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28100768/i-cannot-open-a-ssrs-rdl-file-in-designer-view-why-is-this-happening
