Location of the "SharePoint Sites" folder

Question

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 3:15 PM

We use a citrix vdi enviroment and as such we dont have the normal local profiles on a C: drive. I dont fully understand how SharePoint, Office 2010, Links Folder and the SharePoint sites all work together. But from what I can see SharePoint Sites gets created under C:\users\username and then a shortcut is placed in Links.

What we would ideally like is to have the Links folder redirected to a users home drive (which is easily done) and have the SharePoint sites bit put in the home directory as well but still have everything work as expected in Office programmes and under favorites in Explorer.

Has anyone done anything similar?

Hi Alex,

SharePoint is a web based application. That means that your users only need HTTP (or HTTPS) access on the SharePoint applications. You don't have to map any folder of the SharePoint server for your users.

hope this helps,

SharePoint sites do not get created locally.  SharePoint sites get created in the content database. Templates get pulled from the Root folder which is located c:\program files\common files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14 Most elements are inside the layouts folder.  This folder is a virtual directory on the IIS server.  If you are using Grove or SharePoint workspace, some objects are cached locally, but do not live there.

Here are some links which should be helpful to you.

Here is a video on how SharePoint works you will need silverlight installed to view it.

Sorry, massive confusion by "SharePoint Sites" I mean the link that is put in Windows Explorer on Windows 7 under favorites which is stored in C:\users\username

I am having the same issue.

I want this folder to be re-directed to the user's home directory.

Same issue here.

We tried:

  • adding a REG_EXPAND_SZ key with the same name as the folder's name and the redirected location string as value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  • changing the "Path" value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Open Find\Places\UserDefinedPlaces\SharePointSites

Weird enough, the latter changes right back to the profile location on the local disk the second you use Library " Connect to Office | Add to Sharepoint Sites" function in Sharepoint.

So far: no success...

The question is if this be something that needs to be tackled from the Sharepoint- or the Windows end of things.

Interesting.

I was thinking of changing the setting in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Open Find\Places\UserDefinedPlaces\SharePointSites  but now i will not.

It is really sounding like a sharepoint issue itself.

So there is no way I guess?

Still no closer to an fix so I have resorted to scrapping the "SharePoint Sites" and just manually adding libraries to favorites which is not ideal.
