Question

Hello,
I have problem to use MBIM with unidentified network of LAN.
Here is set up of my environment
PC#1 : Server connected to intra network
PC#2 : Client uses server storage using intra network
MBIM module attached to process internet access
Intranet uses following IP range
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
PC#2 uses following IP only allows internet access by MBIM interface
Ethernet
IP : 192.168.0.17
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : No
By this ip configuration, PC#2 can access and use PC#1's storage only using Ethernet interface.
When MBIM is connected, PC#2 can access internet and can ping to internet server like 8.8.8.8 without problem.
But when it updated windows 10 to 1709, then using same IP configuration of PC#2, even MBIM is connected, PC#2 cannot use internet. Ping to 8.8.8.8 or other site causes error.
Followings are error status:
C:\Users\user>ping 8.8.8.8
Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
PING: transmit failed. General failure.

Of course, before 1709 (like 1703 and below and other windoes 8 etc.) has no issue with same configuration.
The purpose of this tweak is to use only MBIM for internet access but use intra network resource.
What I found it that, if ethernet connection is totally plugged out, then can access internet using MBIM.
I tried to change metric of Internal LAN(Ethernet) to have higher value then MBIM, but doesn't work.
I tried to disable IPv4 of Internal LAN(Ethernet) but it doesn't work either.
Moreover, following ping to force use MBIM interface can work.

Anyone can help this?

Hi Sisego,
I found a numerous amount of people troubled by this issue by now. I tried all known channels. Answers on technet, msdn and feedback hub died however. I do not know if anyone is still working on this.
I had one answer via one of our partners who relayed our question to Microsoft. They proposed a solution, however this does not work for us it seems. We are still trying other approaches.
Could you try this workaround and let me know the result? Set this regkey:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WcmSvc\Local
fMinimizeConnections REG_DWORD 0Apparently this was a designed behavior, and they are still discussing with the owning team whether this is a "correct" design.
Please test and let me know the results. It might be better if we can give feedback from multiple people if it does not work.

Hi,
According to my know, when the destination IP address does not belong to the subnet of any NIC, then a default gateway is used to relay packets to the outside network. When it belongs to the subnet of NIC, we could leave the default gateway blank for that interface.
Please try to check the issue again after re-configured the gateway on your devices.
Bests,

Hi ,
Exactly same configuration/same ip range etc., there is no problem in windows 10 1703.
Only issue happened in windows 10 1709.
In windows 10 1703 PC,
No issue of ping to 8.8.8.8 and internet browsing.

Hi Joy,
Do you mean re-configure MBIM's gateway? or LAN's gateway?
MBIM gateway cannot be configured since it is set up by modem device. For LAN's gateway, the purpose of "Empty" gateway is to limit the internet access by LAN.
Current issue's point is why "from windows 10 1709" shows such behavior and how to overcome this.

Hey,
Is there any progress on this issue? We are having the exact same problem on IoT core.
We are having a MBIM modem for internet, and an ethernet connection for communication on a non-internet network.
Everything was working fine. Just before roll-out in production we noticed that this problem was introduced after an update. After disconnecting the ethernet, internet through the MBIM modem works fine. After pluggin in again internet stops also.
We have been searching for a solution non-stop since discovery and haven't found anything yet.
We already tried everything Bearbear came up with, and using the connection manager is also not a solution.
Any news or fix would be appreciated.
Greetings

Hey Vincent,
I'm meeting your exact same problems (the MBIM is a Sierra Wireless integrate module). The serious thing is that Windows 10 has updated to version 1709 by the customer and now Windows it does not connect anymore. With Windows 1703 I had no problem ...

It works!!!!!!
I don't know how to thank you!!!!
I hope the solution also works for the others!!!
Thank you so much, you saved me from a bad situation!
I must point out that the patch works on Windows 1803, not on the 1709.

Build 1803 had same issue and when i applied reg patch, It works for me too!
Not tested 1709 yet.

It didn't solve it for us but this answer we got from github did:
This is by design. If you have Ethernet or Wi-Fi connected, access to Cellular is blocked.
We have options if you need to bypass Windows policy and allow connectivity over a costed Cellular connection even if Ethernet is connected. Is this Ethernet connection non-routable (e.g. it has no default gateway / no routes)? If so, you can configure the device with a registry value and Windows will allow Cellular traffic even with Ethernet is connected (but not-routable).
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WcmSvc
IgnoreNonRoutableEthernet (REG_DWORD) set to 1
Note that this is not IoT-specific.

it worked for me on 1803, thanks a lot. now I can route my internet through built in cellular modem and specific subnets through my non internet wifi router.

Hi people, this work perfect for me. Thank You for Help.

Hi, Thanks for sharing. After IgnoreNonRoutableEthernet (REG_DWORD) was set to 1, I am able to use the internet on the PC which is connected to the MBIM.
I am however unable to access the internet from the adjoining PC via the ethernet cable. Basically , what I wanted to do was get access to the internet via the MBIM and share this internet to another computer via its ethernet port.
I click on the 'shared' tab of the mbim connection and ticked "allow other network users to connect through this computer"
Then i selected the ethernet port I am using under the "private network connection" drop box.
when I do this, the pc assigns 192.168.137.1 to this ethernet interface. no default gateway.
On the other PC, I tried using
Obtain an IP address automatically option for the IPV4 property, but it didn't work when i tried to connect to the internet.
I also tried setting the IP manually to 192.168.137.10 which is in the same subnet as IP of the other PC. No default gateway. also didn't work
finally, I added a default gateway of 192.168.137.1 which is the IP address of the machine with the MBIM. also didn't work.
Not sure what to do now. Will really appreciate some help. I am using windows version 1903
