Question

Hi,
I have 2 MS servers in our environment
A: local server
B : remote server
I am trying to configure secondary DNS on A via zone transfer from B.As a first step ( allowing zone transfer on source), I tried accessing the remote server using its IP address from the DNS manager on A but I got the below error:
'Access Denied, would you like to add it anyway?'
When I try to access remote DNS server using its name, it works and B's DNS loads on A's DNS manager.
Any idea why it works when we specify the name but doesn't when we specify IP address?
Regards,
Kirti

Hi ,
Did you choose Allow zone transfers to any server in the source?
If you could ping from each other?
Are there any relayed error messages in event log? Go to Event Viewer > Application and Services Logs > DNS server.
Best Regards,
Candy

Hi Candy,
So we normally load the source DNS configuration ( B's DNS configuration ) on the local server and then enable 'allow zone transfer'.
That is working and is fine.
My question is around loading the DNS configuration of the source on the local server (A) which I am trying to make secondary. So instead of RDPing into the source separately, I am trying to load its DNS configuration on the local server itself and then configure zone transfer.
But,in the DNS Manager when I right click on DNS->Connect to DNS server -> Specify the IP of the remote server
It gives me an error 'Acess denied, would u like to add it anyway'
On the other hand when I right click on DNS->Connect to DNS server -> Specify the name of the remote server
The remote server's DNS configuration loads.
I am unable to understand why it works with the server name and not the IP?
I can ping the 2 from each other.
Regards,
Kirti
