Skype for Business Browser Helper - How to prevent installation?

Question

Saturday, July 28, 2018 6:58 PM

Office 2016 Standard appears to install the Skype for Business Browser Helper automatically which cannot run in our environment so it displays a pop-up indicating it is not compatible.  I do not see anywhere in the Office Customization Tool (OCT) to prevent this install from happening???

Hi Eddie,

Based on my knowledge, the Skype for Business Browser Helper is an add-in installed automatically in IE when you install Skype for Business app within Office 2016 suite. In OCT, we can disable the Skype for Business app installation but no setting to disable this add-in installation.

In your scenario, please make sure install the latest updates for Windows and IE. If you still encounter the Office Standard 2016 installation issue, please collect the installation logs (Setupexe log in %temp% folder) here for more analysis.

Winnie Liang

The funny thing is that I do not see Skype for Business as an option within OCT, which really seems odd since I saw lots of posts with that showed that option.  I reset the branch to make sure someone had not helped me out and even launched setup.exe with the /admin for a new configuration and nada.  Here is what I see for a new setup for Office 2016 Standard for 32-bit.

Hi Eddie,

The Skype for Business client is not included in Office Standard 2016. Are you installed standalone Skype for Business client on current computer?

Please open Control Panel > Programs and Features, check the program list and confirm if Skype for Business client is installed.
