Update Distribution Points vs Redistribute

Question

Thursday, October 25, 2012 2:01 AM

We have been having some odd issues with distributing packages.

I know that for a new package it first needs the "Distribute Content" option to be done.

My question is, when do i use "Update Distribution Points"? Is it when the source changes? That is what i have been doing.

On the "Content Locations" tab there is a "Redistribute" option. Is this the same doing "Distribute Content" or "Update Distribution Points"?

I only ask as we are having some odd issues when the source files change and we want to update the distribution point and sometime the only way to get it to work seems to be the "Redistribute" option.

Updating the DP point will update content that has changed since it was orginially disributed. redistributing conent will overwrite all content regardless. So if for some reason the binaries were currupt when it was originally distrbuted this could expain why redistributing seems to fix the package in your case.

Redistribute Content on Distribution Points

You can redistribute a package to copy the content files in the package to distribution points or distribution point groups, overwriting the existing files. You will typically use this operation to repair content files in the package. You can redistribute a package in package properties, distribution point properties, or distribution point group properties. Use one of the following procedures to redistribute the content files in a package to distribution points.
