Networking a Windows 10 PC and a Windows XP PC

Question

Saturday, September 17, 2016 11:06 AM

I have two PCs. One is a new Windows 10 machine  (Computer Name SHC-Study) and the other is Windows XP machine (Computer Name SHC-Storage).  I am attempting to network the two but have only been partially successful. The Windows XP machine (Computer Name SHC-Storage) can view/edit etc folders and files on the Windows 10 machine (Computer Name SHC-Study) through 'My Network Places' as shown in this screen view:-

However the Windows 10 machine only recognises the presence of the XP machine under it's Network listing as shown on the next screen shot:-

The Windows 10 machine cannot list/open the folders and files on the XP machine. Any attempt to do so generates an Open Folder Error Message which reads '\SHC-STORAGE is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The remote call procedure call failed and did not execute' as shown above.
If anyone can offer me guidance as to how to get the Windows 10 machine to list/open folders and files on the XP machine I would be extremely grateful. All the online links that I have followed have not been of any help. I assume that this is a Windows 10 problem as my Windows XP machine lists/opens folders and files on the Windows 10 machine without any problems.

Thank you for this suggestion but the old PC is running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

If so, you cannot turn it off. Windows XP Home Edition-based computers always have Simple File Sharing enabled.

Meanwhile, check the file permission on your Windows XP Home:

In addition, it's recommend you update this Windows XP system to newer one. Since Windows XP's support is ended. New system is more secure, powerful and faster.

Are you using XP Professional? If so, you have to turn off Simple File Sharing on the XP computer in Folder Options > View Tab > Advanced Settings at the end.

Some of us CANNOT update the OS because we have equipment that only runs on old OS. Go figure. I still have an instrument that will ONLY run on Windows NT.

And how does that relate to anything in this thread?

@SLH Cowan

Most people don't get that far. They cannot get the browser service to work with Windows 10 so they cannot even see the XP machine. If it is a recent version of Windows 10 the browser service is problematical if it works at all and SMB 1.0 may be disabled by default.

Make sure that SMB 1.0 and NetBIOS over TCP/IP are enabled in Windows 10 and that the computer browser service is disabled (so that Windows XP is the master browser).

What you have looks like a permissions issue rather than a browsing problem. Have you tried mapping a share with net use and specifying the Windows XP credentials in the command?

A you can see, that works for me.

I have the exact problem you have. If I could have upgraded I would have.

No way JOSE, nasty newer OS not a match to Windows XP. I love my XP, only downfall is the 32bit, after that XP rocks. and no, XP 64 is not a real XP, it is windows server 64bit with a XP look.

Now I have Windows 8.1, windows 7 and windows 10 and the only peace of smaichine that cant see an old tech folder on my XP is windows 10. holly crap for that. a limited win10 OS that can't see a humble XP folder. who wants to upgrade to a resource monger OS that does not work to see a share folder just becaues Microsoft wants you to upgrade and turn you PC at any given time making you loose your information. NO way, I will switch to another OS in some near future. I am sure. Microsoft will end some time.

This Post is to help us find a way to connect to a share folder. not to have some one telling us to upgrade.

It says: "You can't connect to the file share because it's not secure. This share requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol, which is unsafe and could expose your system to attack.

Your system requires SMB2 or higher. For more info on resolving this issue, see: https://go.mincrosoft. com/fwlink/?linkid=852747
