Server 2012 Windows Update problems: There was a problem checking for updates Code 80240437

Question

Monday, July 22, 2013 7:16 AM

I get this problem when attempting to update Windows Server 2012.
Only thing that has changed since i last did the update to the problem is installing Lync Server 2013.
I have tried the solutions advised here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/e7ba0364-154e-404c-a7e5-7cfe4fa3b5c4/windows-update-error-0x80240437-after-installing-lync-2013

But still no luck.

Any ideas?

Hi,

In the link you posted above, I provided six suggestions. I would like to confirm that did you tried all of these suggestions?

If not, please try them and let us know the result.

================================

Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue.

Suggestion 2: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update service.

Suggestion 3: Reset Windows Update components to check the result. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Suggestion 4: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe) to scan and repair the system files. If some files cannot be repaired automatically, you may replace them manually. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft KB and TechNet articles:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Suggestion 5: Run SFC /Scannow to scan and repair the system files. If some corrupted files cannot be repaired, you may manually replace them. For more information, please read the following Microsoft KB article:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Suggestion 6: Perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the whole system.

Hi,

Based on the current situation, I am afraid that we have to perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the whole system.

Hi Arthur,

Results as below:

Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue. - Firewall already disabled and no antivirus installed currently.

Suggestion 2: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update service - tried but didnt resolve.

Suggestion 3: Reset Windows Update components to check the result. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article - When i tried this i could not rename the folder %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 (even in safe mode), and also had problems re-registering some of the DLL's (i will have to try it again to let you know exactly which ones)

Suggestion 4: Run the System Update Readiness tool - is related to versions before WS2012.  I run the tool using powershell using the link below:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2012/09/26/fixing-component-store-corruption-in-windows-8-and-windows-server-2012.aspx - but it did not find any problems and health status was ok

Suggestion 5: Run SFC /Scannow - does not find any problems.

Suggestion 6: Perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the whole system - it is a new server and Lync 2013 has been deployed to the office so really want to avoid doing a rebuild of the server if at all possible.

I hope you haven't yet in-place upgraded your system, or rebuilt it. The issue is related to the disablement of TLS 1.2 using registry settings. If you re-enable TLS 1.2 in the registry WIndows Update works again. That however does cause Lync to use your certificate properly, so re-disable it after running WIndows Update.

Unfortunately after trying everything i could find online i had to rebuild my entire lync front end from scratch due to time constraints.

I feel sorry for you. When I read replys from "Microsoft senior expert partner", or whatever title they have read themselves up to, I often ignore them. Most of the time they give you this huge copy/paste craplist you have to follow, that will take days to comply and with vague reference to the problem. And the last suggestion is always to reinstall Everything. Did it work? Nice, give me 1000 points.

Those experts really annoy me. It seems to me the only application they're ever opened is a web browser, and when they do they try to Bing you the answer.

With kind regards, Steinar

Yeah unfortunately, rebuilding the entire machine seems to be the MS solution to a lot of things! :)

Which, most IT professionals know anyway.

Wait...so you tell us to wipe the system and then get to mark that as an "answer"? Really? Do you realize how many thousands of users have this exact problem? This is NOT an answer!
