Question

Hello,
I have been experiencing crashes when initiating an RDS connection to no matter what. The crash happens right after the authentication, when it starts to load the profile. However works just fine if I use something like Remote Desktop Connection Manager. It started right after the Fall Creators update installation. I have done all of the below, without solving it:
1. Clean booted the machine
2. Disabled the AV and FW just in case
3. Removed all printers and disabled printer redirection
4. dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and SFC /scannow
I am running out of ideas. Please help.

The final solution was a fresh install. After that I have installed the printers and Fall Creators update - and no problem.
To summarize all of the proposed and attempted fixes:
1. Fully patch
2. If possible revert Fall Creators Update
3. Clean boote the machine
4. Disable the AV and FW just in case
5. Remove all printers and disabled printer redirection
6. dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and SFC /scannow

Hi Stoyan,
it may help to see all the modules loaded during a crash.
Can you download and run the following application (AppCrashView):
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html
Click on one of the recent mstsc.exe errors.
Can you copy and paste the information that appears in the lower window that has loaded modules.
Regards
Simon

Hi Stoyan,
Can you open powershell, use the command "get-printer" and post the output?

Hi,
It is suggested that you can install all the updates, making sure your machine is up to date after upgrade to Windows 10 1709.
Then it is suggested that you can disable the resource mapping, install latest video driver and remove content of
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Cache
If you can copy the below dll file from a working machine like 1709 to replace it on your machine.
%systemroot%\system32\mstscax.dll
%systemroot%\system32\mstsc.exe
C:\Windows\System32\en-US\mstscax.dll.mui
C:\Windows\System32\en-US\matsc.exe.mui
If you can't solve the problem, please help us collect the event log, right click them>save all selected as..
In addition, you can check the logs under event viewer>application and services logs>microsoft>windows>terminalservices-localsessionmanager>operational.
You can upload them to a network drive and share the link here, if you need any help.

Hi Simon,
Here is the output, but I doubt it being related to the printers. I have disabled their redirection all together.

Hi Vivian,
All updates are installed!
I have done the cash directory clean up originally. BTW the proper location of the cash directory is C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Cache. Did it again for good measure, but it didnt help.
Did the file replacement and that did nothing as well
Posting the event logs will not give you any more info other the even that I have given you above.
The logs under event viewer>application and services logs>microsoft>windows>terminalservices-localsessionmanager>operational - have to be checked on the computer that I am logging to.
The events there are :

From my research, it may be a known issue and here is the reason:
The RS3 release of Windows shipped several pdf print driver with a dynamic shim that crashes the spooler service when the shim is loaded
The SHIM engine in Windows can shim a DLL or an executable. The functionality to shim a DLL has been broken since TH1 (or earlier) but the code was dormant until late in RS3. We unintentionally woke the code in RS3, and now the SHIM infrastructure causes a crash when a specific driver is loaded. The specific driver being load is old and comes as part of the installation of older versions of Quicken made by Intuit. Once that driver is installed on a system (Quicken is installed on the system), any process that loads that driver will crash. This is the case for the RDP service, since that service loads all print drivers on the system.
Workaround:
Uninstall the Quicken PDF printer or change the printer driver.
It is appreciated that you can wait for the hotfix released to fix the problem.

Hello Vivian, I too have the problem Printer Spooler keeps terminating even though its set to automatic. If I set all three recovery option to restart the service then my Print Spool keeps printing multiple times every time it restarts.
I am not able to use my laptop to print. Please find below the error from the event log

Hi,
I have to say that it may be related to the know issue either.
Here are the symptoms:
Apps crash when submitting print jobs using certain versions of the Intuit PDF printer driver
Apps like notepad, wordpad crash when saving files while using certain versions of the Intuit PDF printer driver
Web browser including (but likely not limited to ) the Microsoft Edge browser crash when browsing web pages.
MSTSC.EXE / RDP crashes when establishing RDP connections.
Related bugs allude to Spooler crashes but details are vague on this point.
The RS3 release of Windows shipped several pdf print driver with a dynamic shim that crashes the spooler service when the shim is loaded

Hi Vivian,
Thanks for the ideas, but none of them helped.
I dont have a Quicken PDF installed. But just in case I have uninstalled all printers including the HP. I have also reinstalled windows 10 on the top of the current installation.
None of that helped.
Do you have some other ideas, or should I just do a fresh install and then not install the fall creators update?
Thursday, April 19, 2018 6:41 AM
Since the problem happens right after you upgrade to RS3,
I will suggest that you can roll back to the previous version to avoid such printer issue.
Thanks for your understanding.

I think the problems is related to the driver stack of the printer, since I am not sure if the driver stack of HP will be loaded previously and even though you have uninstall it, it has stored in the driver manifest.
Once the application like RDP run , it loads such driver stuck, then causing crash.

I am doing a fresh reinstall. Kind of ran out of ideas. I will test on every step to see if this is replicated. Thanks for the hints.

My workaround was to disable forwarding remote sound to local (do not play). Seems one of my third-party sound drivers is causing a problem. Found this solution here: http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2014/12/fixed-remote-desktop-connection-stopped-working-error-windows-8-1/
