Expired Password via RDP - Unable to Change Password - Not Going Through Server

Hi,

We have remote users that connect from their home PCs to PCs that we have set up in the offices. We have recently upgraded their work machines to Windows 10 and it seems to have caused an issue where the users are now not able to change their password when it has expired, if they are not within the remote session.

For example, if I tried to remote into my PC from home, after my password has expired, I will get a message that tells me that my password has expired and that I need to contact my system administrator. It does not give me the option to change my password, despite this being the case before we upgraded to Windows 10.This is before I have been able to connect to the other machine.

We have NLA disabled automatically via Group Policy, so this is not like the Windows 2012 issue with NLA. I've tried finding other possible solutions for this, but have come up blank at the moment.We do not have Remote Desktop Services Manager or Terminal Services running, so it is just a client to client connection.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a setting that I'm missing with this? Apologies if this is in the wrong place. Also, we do not have 24 hour IT support, but we have consultants that work around the world, so this can cause some problems in the future if users do not heed the 'Your password will expire in xxx' message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi JessDWS,

It is not available to change an expired user account password in a remote desktop session.
We could try to configure the following gpo as a work around.
Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Options\Interactive logon: Prompt user to change password before expiration

Of course, we could try to press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" to get the change password option.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. We were able to change the password before, so is this something that has changed with Windows 10?

We have the prompt in place already, but some people don't always take note of the warnings! So there is no other workaround?

Try to use "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" to get the change password option.

Hi,

I can't use CTRL + ALT + Delete when I'm outside of the RDP session, if that makes sense. If my password is expired and I try to log into an RDP session, it simply returns an error. Pressing CTRL + ALT + Delete will simply open up my local machine's option to change my local password, not my domain password and domain account which is related to the machine I'm trying to remote to, which is the one that will have expired. In Windows 7, if this password expired, you would get a prompt to re-enter your old password and create a new one before/as you enter the RDP session. However it doesn't let me do that on Windows 10, whether because it's something that's changed with Windows 10 or if there's a misplaced setting that I need to enable. Is there such a setting or has Windows 10 removed this entirely?

Hi JessDWS,

I would make an apology. The keyboard combination should be "Ctrl+Alt+END".
In my working environment, we have the same issue and we use "Ctrl+Alt+END" to get the change password option.

Hi,

Sorry, but again, this doesn't help my problem. To be able to use CTRL + Alt + Anything, you have to be within the session. If my password is expired, I cannot get into the session to use CTRL + ALT + End or any variation of it. If I have an expired domain password, I'm not going to be able to remote into the machine to change my password, because Remote Desktop Connection comes back with an error stating that my password is expired. Previously, when remoting into a Windows 7 machine, the error would appear but you would then be prompted to enter a new password. With Windows 10, that does not happen. You just get an error and cannot go further. It would be simple enough if they could get into a session and change their password from there, but they can't. That's what I need help with, or at least a confirmation that this has changed with Windows 10 and it's no longer possible to do it this way.

Hi JessDWS,

We may use terminal server service in our working environment. As a result, it will work for us. You could try to use the built-in "Feedback" tool to submit the issue on your side.

At present, we could configure a task schedule to notify the user before the password was expired (notify them multiple times and tell them the importance) when they could remote to the machine.

Okay so, in other words, there is no way of changing your password if it's expired prior to entering a remote session into a Windows 10 machine, despite this being a feature that was available on Windows 7? That's really all I want clarification on.

This thread is painful to read. The moderator completely fails to understand the question being asked. Moderators with more knowledge would help by not wasting peoples' time.

Hi I am not sure if this is still a problem for you. But I guess a way to work around this is to edit the rdp file and set this property - enablecredsspsupport:i:0. 

This will allow you to load the login page on rdp which has the option to change password once you login using the old password or the new password provided by the administrator if you requested a reset of password.

THIS IS THE ANSWER!

adding this line to the rdp file enabled me to get into a session, enter my expired password.

This resulted in a message from the server that my password expired and the dialog to set my NEW password.  Just like I had with Windows 7.

Note-- I added the line to the rdp file in a text editor.
