Question
Thursday, April 2, 2015 2:24 PM
I am running Windows 2012 R2 standard in a virtual machine. When I run the server manager I get 2 errors:
1. Cannot get role and feature data
2. Windows Modules Installer stopped (I will ask about this in a separate question so that we can stay on point)
Why am I getting error 1 and how can I resolve it?
Thanks
Sam

Good news, at least for me is that I now have WSUS running. The issue was that all of the updates were not installed even though Windows Update said they were. I found out by doing the reboot after the updates on the system console that 1 or more updates failed. The problem was a GPO issue which when resolved allowed the successful installation of WSUS

Hi Sam,
I suggest you can collect more detailed information to help us to troubleshoot:
1. Please make sure you open Server Manager with Admin privilege
2. Collect related error or failure information fom Event Viewer, please also post the error code if any.
3. Check the CBS.log under "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS"
4. Please make sure you have installed Windows Updates.
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
Best Regards,
Anna Wang

Anna,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, this has not been a good week to be at IT person at my company :-)
Here are some of the errors that I'm getting (I'm running all processing as administrator):

Server Manager tells me that 3 services are all stopped
Windows Internal Database
World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC)
Windows Modules Installer
And under Manageability I get "Online - Cannot get role and feature data"
As for current updates that need to be downloaded, there are 2, Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB2955164) and Security Update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (KB2977320). When I try to install these I get an error message "Windows couldn't complete the requested changes. Windows Server roles and features cannot be automatically installed or uninstalled via the Windows Features Control Panel. To install Windows Server roles and features, start Server Manager, or use the Server Manager cmdlets for Windows Powershell" and then it fails." First, I don't see anything in the Server Manager that is about downloading patches and second, at this point in the failure "The request to list features available on the specified server failed". At this point I reboot the server to clear out everything and to see if I can add these patches but I don't see anything that describes installing patches.
My CBS.log file is over 14MB so I don't want to attach it to this conversation. If there is something specific to look for please let me know.
Hopefully this is enough information to get started. And, thank you very much for your help

Hi Sam,
For the "Cannot start service MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID on computer " error, please check the service "Windows Internal Database (WID)", the logon account is "NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID" by default, so you can investigate this service and troubleshoot why it can't start.
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
Best Regards,
Anna Wang

I made WID logon to the "Local System" account and it now appears to be stable but I still can't get the service to stay up. Here is the latest sequence of events and errors. Anything that can be done to help would be greatly appreciated:
Ran all of the procedures as per https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852338.aspx. Received the following error, “The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed because the server that you specified requires a restart”. What server?
The Server Manager Dashboard shows 1 error, under Manageability, “Online – Cannot get role and feature data”. A short time later WSUS Service stops and Windows Module Installer stops. Both of these services are set to Log on as “Local System” and are set to Automatic restart.
Looking in the event log I see the following errors all occurring at the same time

Please suggest anything for me to try. Thank you very much

I was able to uninstall WSUS and I removed it's database. I then rebooted the server and when it came up I did the WSUS installation via the server manager. I went through the entire process of the install and then was told that the install failed because the server needed to be rebooted. I rebooted and when it came back there was no WSUS running. This is getting very weird.
I moved the CBS log file aside so that a new file would be created for the next install. The installation went as expected and ended with "The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed because the server that you specified requires a reboot." So, I rebooted after moving my fresh CBS log aside and again no WSUS was installed. Can anyone make any sense of this? My log file is over 3MB so I can't attach it here but if someone tells me what to look for that would be helpful.

I became frustrated with the previous efforts and decided to recreate a brand new, clean installation of Windows 2012 R2 to eliminate any issues related to other programs that were installed or that might have conflicted with WSUS.
Once the new machine was created I downloaded all available patches to eliminate that issue. Next I brought up the Server Manager and went through the default WSUS installation. At the end of the installation I got the error message:
The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed because the server that you specified requires a restart.
When I look at what services are running I see the following:
- WSUS Service is disabled and not running
- Windows Internal Database is manual and not running
- Windows Modules Installer is automatic and not running
- There are no SQL or Web processes listed
I’m unable to start The WID because of a logon failure (NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID). So I change it to the local system account and it starts. I change WSUS to automatic and it starts fine. And the Windows Modules Installer starts by itself. Going back to the Server Manager I do a refresh and WSUS Service and Windows Module Installer both stop. This is the tail end of the CBS log:
