BitLocker and File History

Question

Monday, March 26, 2018 2:37 PM

Hi All,

Would welcome some advice.

I have been using file history to backup files onto a removable hard disc for sometime and I realised that its a bit of a risk as my removable drive didn't have any security on it. So used BitLocker to encrypt the removable drive - to use filehistory with this removable drive do I now need to encrypt the files on my computer?

Many thanks

No. As soon as the drive is unlocked, it can be used normally and no changes to your OS need to be made.

Hi,

In addition, please note, if you encrypt the drive, the recovery key is the last way to unlock the drive.

If you have forgotten the recovery key, you are not able to decrypt and access the drive, that is the sole purpose of BitLocker.

Best regards,

Tao

Will the file history continues working even the removable drive is bitlocked?

Bitlocker operates transparently. Yes, all software and file history will operate normally.

Thank you for your response. Do you mean that if a ransomeware hit my PC will infect my bitlocked drive?

The bitlocker encryption will prevent access only when the computer is not running, when the partition is not already mounted. As soon as you start windows, the partition is open and bitlocker is protection against ransomware.
