Excel 2016 Row Turns Black After Data Entry For One User

Question

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 6:27 AM

We have a user that whenever he updates a cell in his excel spreadsheet, value entered then has some calculations that updated other areas of the sheet, the line the data was entered on turns black.  If you then minimize the workbook or scroll out of view of the line and come back everything refreshes and you can see what you entered.

This behavior has started within the last few days and previous to this time had never been seen by this user.  Other people in the office using the same version of Excel 2016 or even previous versions do not experience this same behavior.  They can open this workbook/sheet and don’t have this black line issue.  This issue isn’t only limited to this sheet/workbook and occurs on other workbooks as well that have calculations setup.

This is a fairly new PC running Windows 10 Pro, setup from scratch about six months ago.  The system is an Intel NUC 6i7KYK with 16GB RAM & a 960 evo ssd.  The Office version is a click to run Office 2016 Home & Business copy purchased out right (not office 365).  We have three of these PCs in the office and its only affecting 1 user.  The PC is set in High Performance for power mode.

I have found a workaround but no permanent solution.  If I change the view mode from the default of print layout and switch it to normal the issue goes away.  However, it immediately comes back when selecting print layout mode again.  When looking at other users pc they all default to print layout too but don’t experience this issue.

Here’s what I have tried so far to remedy the issue:

  • Update all intel nuc drivers/bios to the latest versions
  • Tried quick repair & full repair of Office
  • Change default printer to print to pdf & xps & check local printer driver for latest version
  • Tried setting high dpi setting to false in excel manifest
  • Disable hardware acceleration (excel options)
  • Set screen back to one monitor only
  • Switch screen excel window opens on
  • Copied workbook from network to local machine & thumb drive & execute from both
  • Adjust monitor scaling back to 100%
  • Check default monitor refresh rate, set to 60 hertz
  • Remove contents of appdata roaming Excel (backup of files created before deletion)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The 8431.2094 build has indeed solved the problem!

It didn't pop up in a Windows Update but I was able to force the install a few days ago by opening Excel > File > Account > Updates > Check.

Hope this helps everyone else!

Best!

Same issue. Will be following this thread.

Running Windows 10 Home, AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6, 8GB RAM, 64-bit. Will try the above remedies that CoMpUtErGoD20XX tried and update if anything works.

Hi both,

>> We have a user that whenever he updates a cell in his excel spreadsheet, value entered then has some calculations that updated other areas of the sheet, the line the data was entered on turns black.

By this, do you mean dark borders around rows and cells appear when entering text in Excel 2016?

If this is the case and you are running MSI version of Office, please try to install September 12, 2017, update for Excel 2016 (KB4011165) to fix the issue.

Hope this can be helpful.

Best regards,
Yuki Sun

I don't think that update applies to me as I am running a click to run version which is installed from the office online store.

Also, my issue isn't really borders but the overall majority of the row in which data is entered turns black (whole cell(s) is filled black).  Once it does you can't read the contents of the cell(s) until you minimize the sheet and re-open or scroll out of view and then come back.

I am experiencing exactly same problem. Devs, please help to resolve the issue.

Update: Blacking out happens only when the sheet is in Page Layout view. However, in normal view, its working fine.

Aditya_M, thanks for the information.  I was also having this issue, and this took care of it.

It makes me wonder though...what exactly is causing it to happen to begin with?  Latest C2R Version of Excel?  nVidia driver issues?  Incompatibility with the latest Windows 7 updates?

While the fix that you mentioned works, it is only a band-aid.  It is not exactly fixing the root cause, ya know?

Same problem as mine. Any easy and immediate fix people?

Excel 2016, I have MS Home 365 (click-to-run version), Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)

Ours is doing the same thing, running O365 Click to Run version 1708.

Only happens on some spreadsheets and only in 'Page Layout' mode.

Example;

Before.

After, have just entered the text 1234 in the cell below Truck #1.

Matt.

Same problem here.

Excel version 1708 (Build 8431.2079 Click-to-Run). My sheets were set to open in Page Layout view. Contains a lot of calculations and conditional formatting. When I open the workbook every cell is black. If I change the view to Normal view, evrything works well. When I change back to Page Layout view, the cells become visible, but without conditional formatting. If I try to modifiy one cell the conditional formatting becomes active for that cell, but when I push enter the cell becomes black again. I already updated my display driver, changed my default printer, but still not working. The same workbook on another computer works fine.

Please help.

Running the update fixed my version of Office365 (Click and run).  Running build 8431.2094 (Version 1708) now.
