Is It Safe to Uninstall OneDrive

Question

Friday, August 10, 2018 9:05 PM

I do not use OneDrive, nor do I expect to ever have need to, since I have unlimited cloud space from another vendor.

I've encountered problems in other areas because of OneDrive; one example is that with the version 1803 Feature Update OneDrive causes the cloud backup product that I use to now fail when making full system backups.  I've had to include an exclusion of the OneDrive folder, but sometimes even that fails.

I'd like to know if I uninstalled it, would that cause other problems in Windows 10?  Also, if I did so, would future feature updates attempt to reinstall it, and/or fail the installation because of it.

  • OneDrive is built into Windows 10, so you can’t uninstall it like an app. However, you can hide it and stop syncing OneDrive files to your PC. To do so, follow the steps in Turn off or uninstall OneDrive.

Hello,

It's 100% safe to prevent use of OneDrive. It won't cause any issues.

You can apply Group Policy to disable OneDrive:

Thank you for your reply.  I followed your link and unlinked then uninstalled OneDrive.  Hopefully, when the next feature update gets installed it won't reinstall OneDrive.  If it does, however, I now know how to take care of it.

Hi, and thank you for your reply.  Since I was able to uninstall OneDrive, I didn't think it was necessary to add the Group Policy.  However, if, when the next feature update is installed, OneDrive is reinstalled, I'll go ahead and enable that Group Policy so that I won't have to worry about having to uninstall it every time a feature update is posted.
