I work for an engineering firm. We would like to generate transmittals using SharePoint. Does SharePoint have a "bolt-on" solution?

Hello,
I am not well versed in Engineering, but I am assuming that it’s a content management scenario with some business tasks.
SharePoint 2010 doesn’t provide exactly the Drawing Transmittal process used by Engineering, but you could use basic SharePoint document library to store drawings. Each time the drawing is created or changed, trigger workflows to generate transmittals, request acknowledgement and send email with records of drawing to previous recipients, also embed the file into workflow email.
Thanks & Regards.

A transmittal is used to record the distribution of documents. If I revise a set of engineering drawings and email it to a list of people, the transmittal records the documents that were sent, when it was sent, and who they were sent to. This becomes a legal document. If we sent a customer document "A rev-1", and they are developing a project using document "A", it becomes a problem when things go wrong and the customer says "we never got document A-rev-1"

A Drawing Transmittal is a formal process used by Engineering and Construction Companies to transmit Drawings to other Engineers, Sub-contractors, Vendors and Fabricators. The sender of a Drawing Transmittal may also provide a reason for sending the drawings, a special message and a date by which a response is required. Since a Drawing Transmittal is a contractual document, it is important to also request for an acknowledgement of the receipt of the drawings described in the drawing transmittal.
The drawing transmittal must abe capable of creating an email containing the transmittal in PDF format (from .dwg). All drawings should be automatically zipped and attached to the email. The system should maintain a history of all drawing transmittals and when drawings are revised it should automatically prompt you to send previous recipients the newly revised drawings.

We have quickly implemented a SharePoint based document transmittal solution for a customer using out of the box SharePoint 2010 and Nintex Workflow 2010. This solution was jointly presented with the customer at the International SharePoint Conference 2012. The solution enables:
- Automating the publishing of transmittals to an extranet
- Ensuring that the correct versions of documents are seen by the right people
- Automatically generating emails to clients detailing the contents of each transmittal
- Setting alerts to notify when transmittals are updated
- Automatically tracking client acceptance of transmittals
