Question

Hi,
I've read several discussions in this forum about "Windows Storage Server 2008 R2". But it's still unclear to me, so sorry, I have to ask.
My company is Microsoft's Gold Partner. Are we eligible to have "Windows Storage Server 2008 R2" without having to pay an OEM version?
When I go to MSDN Subscriptions downloads, I can find two similar downloads:
- Server Install Disc: Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials (x64) - DVD (English)
- Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Embedded (Standard, Enterprise, Workgroup) with iSCSI Software Target 3.3 (x64) - DVD (Multiple Languages)
I know that WSS are divided into three editions: Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise. But what is Essentials?
The Embedded one has a description saying "You must first install Windows Server 2008 R2 before installing this product." That means I don't need to buy OEM version of WSS 2008? Does it also mean if I take the "Essentials" one, I don't need to install Windows Server 2008 before?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Something is not consistent with those two articles:
* The first article said "..... Windows Storage Server Essentials is specifically developed to address the storage needs for small businesses up to 25 users without the need for specialized IT skills...."
* The second one said "...Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials is the ideal solution in those businesses under 75 users that want to add robust client backup functionalities to their SBS Standard or traditional Windows Server based network...."
For the installation, well, that's not quite simple: a lot of steps.
