VPN automatically disconnects when switching users Windows 10

Question

Monday, January 4, 2016 11:09 PM

Hello,

I have several remote users that we have recently hired on to our company. We use the Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN client for remote users. We do not have any SSO set up so everything is Windows Credential based. I am fairly new to the company but I am noticing issues when users go to change their passwords. Normally you would want to connect to the VPN and then use the Windows Mechanism to change your password, However this is not working because once my users go to lock their screens or use Control Alt Del to change their password the client disconnects. I am wondering if this is a due to Windows 10 feature and what the solution or if it seems like more of an issue with the way our VPN client is configured. Any insight you guys could provide would be extremely helpful.

Thanks,

Wes

Hi,

Please first check the power management configure as below:

1) Go to the Device Manager.

2) Expand network adapters, select the adapter(s) you are using (In my case the Intel wireless and the Realtek PCIe devices), then right click and choose properties.

3) Select the Power Management Tab from along the top and make sure that the box that says something like "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked.

Additionally, check following suggestions:

1. If you have any 3rd party security software installed e.g. anti-virus/firewall etc. you may want to consider temporarily disabling them to see if they are blocking the packets.
2. Test your VPN connection from another network e.g. wifi hotspot, neighbor etc. If the issue persists then its likely an issue with your computer/device. If the issue resolves itself then its likely your router or ISP that is causing the issue.
3. If you have a 2nd computer that doesn't have the exact same software configuration then install the VPN software and try connecting. If the issue persists its unlikely that its your computer/device and more likely your router or ISP.

For further troubleshooting, please capture the Network trace by using network monitor:

Please capture and view the traffic sent between VPN routers during the VPN connection process and during data transfer. You cannot interpret the encrypted portions of VPN traffic with Network Monitor. Download and install Network Monitor from the Microsoft Download Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=92844).

It seems something to do with the VPN client.

Did you check with the app vendor ?
