Question

Friday, August 24, 2018 12:49 PM

Hello,

My laptop is  Lenovo Ideapad 110S-11IBR (4GB RAM ,eMMc 32GB Hard drive,Windows 10),

Yesterday, I let the system go to "sleep mode" before I sleep,

When I wake up and restart my laptop,  I was shocked... beacuse the hard drive just have 3GB space .

I never saw update.esd (3GB) before it found  in my laptop (by "Treesize" software )

This file is under by hidden system folder "OSRSS", it is hidden and can't be delete even I click "Show hidden files" in the folder options.

How can I do to delete this files and get my hard drive space back?

Thank you~

Would you mind to share a screenshot of the folder with the full path to it (where it's located). Also please go to Properties of this folder > Security tab and make a screenshot of it.

Hi,

We don't recommend you to delete the ESD file, the folder is used for a  Reset feature, If your PC has issue and need to re-back to the original state, you will need the folder.

And, if the C:\ need more space, I recommend you move other non-system program to other disk, and try to Disk Cleanup to check previous Windows Installations and temporary Windows Installation files, then will be cleanup.

Hope it can help you.

Best Regards,

Otto Wang

I try to disk cleanup again again and again, but not helpful.

Because the files size just so small (about 160MB)

Windows Installations / temporary Windows Installation files was cleaned.

Hi,

Based on my research, the OSRSS folder may stand for OS Remediation System Service, which is a background service to facilitate Windows Update service. The file under this folder would be the protected operating system files, so we could not see this folder in Explorer. It is not suggested deleting this folder.

Please try to uncheck “Hide protected operating system files”, then check if we can see the folder in File Explorer.

Thanks Otto Wang ~

I can see the "OSRSS" folder  in my laptop now, when I uncheck “Hide protected operating system files”.But i can't open the folder.

So is it come from Windows update ?(microsoft server)

Beacuse I shutdown the Windows update program at least 6 months,

but you can see it is created in 24-08-2018 suddenly.

Nothing in the folder but it is not true (Treesize)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply and sharing the information here.

By default, OSRSS folder is a protected folder and we do not have privileges to read it, so it will display as 0 size when we check its properties. To open the folder, we need have proper permissions.

As I know, pause updates from being install is allowed up to 35 days, and when exceeding 35 days, Windows Update will resume and it will get updates automatically.

This folder may come with KB4056254, I suspect this update may be installed automatically via Windows Update.

Still, since the folder is protected system files, it is not suggested deleting it. For better user experience and system security, I would suggest you upgrade this system to latest version i.e. Windows 10 1803.

Hope it can help. Thanks for your understanding.

Hi , otto wang :)

Unfortunately, I can't delete it yet. I search the google for it in this whole week ,not many people have same problem @@

I know this is system file, and it should not to be delete.

If I don't do it, my laptop just have Windows 10

If I try to delete this files the system may be crash but my laptop 's hard disk is so small unless I add to the other M.2 SSD in my laptop (I found  one M.2 slot in my laptop)

One day if I figure out how to delete it and my system not crash , I will keep post it in here.

Anyway thanks for your help :)
