Question

After installing Sharepoint Foundation 2011 last night, my DNS server will not start up. When I try to start the service up, I get the error
Windows could not start the DNS server service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid.
Checking Event Viewer shows this error every time I try to start the service
The DNS Server service terminated with the following error: The data is invalid.
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7023
I have searched the web like crazy but, I can't find anyone that has had the same problem. Does anyone have a clue what could cause this and how I can fix it. It is a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine functioning as a Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS, File / Print Services, and WDS.

Well, I have no clue why but I checked it today and all was well. DNS started up just fine and isn't showing any errors.
Thanks for trying to help!

Hi matthewprenger,
Thanks for posting here.
Is this DNS server holding AD integrated DNS zone ? if so have you got other domain controllers with also DNS installed ?
Maybe we can troubleshoot by removing and reinstalling the DNS service on this host and see if it will start up properly.
Thanks.

Can you compare the settings in the following registry with a working machine?
HKLM/System/Currentcontrolset/services/dns/
HKLM/System/Currentcontrolset/services/dns/parameters
If that doesnt help, you will have to get a process monitor trace when you try to start the dns service.
Start procmon
try to start DNS and let the error pop out
stop procmon and save log as .pml
