Error Saving Resource Properties - Cluster Resource Dependency cannot be found

Question

I am attempting to add a new resource to an existing cluster group, but I am running into problems when I try to configure the properties.  I am running Windows 2008 Enterprise (SP2) and the primary cluster application is SQL Server 2008 Enterprise (SP1).  These are both the 64 bit versions.

I have purchased a monitoring tool that runs as a service beside SQL Server and am trying to include it in the Resource Group so that regardless of where SQL is running the monitor will be available as well.  I have worked with their support to get this configured, but we have been unable to resolve this last issue.  I have since tried to add a "random" service to the group as opposed to just the monitor and am recieving the same error, so I believe it is more a problem of my cluster configuration as opposed to the 3rd party application.

So far this is what I have been able to accomplish:

  1. I have installed the 3rd party application on all 3 cluster nodes.
  2. I have configured the service on all 3 nodes using their cluster configuration tool.
  3. I have added the "Generic Service" to my Cluster Group using the Failover Cluster Management tool.

I am now attempting to go in and modify the properties of my new agent, but am unable to save any changes.  I have tried different combinations of properties (as well as a different service) to see if it is something specific, but get the same error regardless of what I select in the properties dialog.  I have not tried to save changes on my SQL Server resource because I'm scared it would actually work and inadvertantly break something.  Here is the complete error message that I am receiving: Error saving the resource properties.  Unable to save property changes for 'ServiceNameHere'.  The cluster resource dependency cannot be found.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get past this?  I've run out of things to try.

After working with the Vendor for a while, it came down to be order of events...  After adding the resource, the properties would save as long as I didn't change the "Use Network Name as Computer Name" check box during the first update.  Once everything else was set properly, I came back and checked this setting as requested.

It seems a little odd that order would matter, but in case anyone runs across this I wanted to put it out here.

what dependencies did you place on the resource group?

At this point there are no dependencies on the Resource being added.  I am getting the error during the process of adding them.  I also checked the Application (the new 2008 name for Resource Group) but didn't see anywhere to set the specific dependencies.

My guess is that something is looking for the "Cluster" resource that we used to have back in Windows 2003 clustering.  From what I can tell the Cluster service is running on all 3 nodes as opposed to being a group that fails between them.  I'm assume this is a change in the way 2008 operates, but I can't find anything to confirm this theory.
