No Internet on Domain-controlled client computers.

Question

Friday, November 1, 2019 7:23 PM

Hi everyone. This is my first post here and also my first post ever related to Windows Server. I recently started learning more about windows server and finally managed to install and run a domain controller on my 7-pc (running windows 10) network. The problem is that in order to join the clients to the domain i need to use the Server's ip address as the DNS for the client computers which then lose internet connectivity since internet is being given out to the network through a modem. Is there a way that I can get away with not having to bridge the internet connection through the server; since that will require using ethernet cables to connect my computers to the network while now they are all connected via wireless?

Thanks for any suggestion and sorry for my poor English.

Hi ,

In an active directory domain clients all use domain DNS. When a client makes an internet page request the queries are resolved in a top level down fashion via the 13 default root hint servers or also more directly via any configured forwarders.

Please check if you configure external DNS address as forwarders, like 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 (google).

For how to configure a DNS server to use forwarder , you could refer to the following link:

Configure a DNS Server to Use Forwarders

Hope this can help you, if you have anything unclear, please let me know.

Best Regards,

Candy
