Question
Monday, October 2, 2017 3:00 PM
A client just purchased a new laptop with Windows 10 pro. I can remote desktop to our server (Server 2016 Essentials) with no issue. However when I try to connect to a Windows 7 desktop on the same network it refuses to connect with a permissions error. We use the same credentials that we use to connect to the server (Domain).
I can connect to the Windows 7 desktop with other computers using the same credentials with on problems. So there seems to be some kind of issue with RDP between Win 10 and Win 7. I see a lot of posts about Win 7 to Win 10 issues, but not the other way around.
My client has another Win7 laptop and can connect just fine to the Win7 desktop
We have tried through a VPN tunnel and direct using port forwarding exactly the same way we connected the other Win 7 laptop.
We need this issue resolved and I am out of altitude, airspeed and ideas.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

Hi,
Considering this issue is related to NTLM authetication level:
To configure NTLM compatibility for Windows 7 on your Windows 10 PC:
1 Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run and type secpol.msc in the
Open box, and then click OK.
2 Click Local Policies > Security Options > Network Security: LAN Manager
authentication level.
3 Click Send LM & NTLM response.
4 Click Apply.
Then, see if this issue can be fixed for you.

Ok,
A dumb solution. As it turns out for some reason when we were trying to connect to the Windows 7 machine, RDP was trying to connect to a machine account and not a domain account. Once we figured that out and used the correct user ID to include the domain name, no problems.
I have never had RDP do that in the past and we RDP to Domain machines all the time.

I am having the same problem.
Thing is, this USED to work.
I applied the secpol.msc as described above.
Not only can I not remote Desktop, but I cannot file-browse to the Win7 machine.
I can do both to remote Win10, WinServer, WinXP machines, but not to the Win7 Machine.
But other PCs, not win10, can RD and file-browse the Win7 machine.
Any suggestions?
