File explore search doesn't read dash

Question

Friday, July 15, 2016 5:08 PM

Hello, in some of my file i have a dash in them ex abc-123, associated with a bar code. I scan the bar code and  inputs the abc-123 in the file explore. Then it doesn't come up with a result. From all my tests i have done i have conculded that file explore search doesnt read a dash as dash but reads it as minus command. Im trying to get this machine up and working but can't due to this dash being read as minus subtracting the file name letter from the search. We work in a fast passed environment, we need to be able to scan and get the exact match right away and not multiple ones with the same beginning. Windows 7 doesn't have this problem. So as of right now we are going to stay on windows 7 till we can get this resolved. If any one has any ideas on a resolution please post them, as i will try them.

thanks

Have a look at How to search for special characters in Explorer?

So from that post, either searching for ~=- or filename:*- shows me all files with dashes. So ~=abc-123 should find just abc-123 I believe.

Hi,

As Mr. Happy said, I can find out my file which has a dash on name, you should search result in File Explorer rather than search box(Cortana).

Hello, This is a problem i noticed in windows 10

i have noticed that when we use a barcode scanner or manually start typing in the name of the file it works but as soon as i add the dash in it acts like a minus and subtracts the letters out.  so if i have a file name abc123-abc the enter search comes back as no file found when there is a file. I Have noticed this for all of our files with a dash in them. I also noticed that Windows 7 doesn't read the dash as minus but as dash. Has any one else noticed this issue? or resolved this issue? I would like to get upgraded to windows 10 but i can't if the file explorer wont find the file.

The computer is set up to only scan. They don't have time to be typing in modifiers in the search every time they scan, that will slow down the production. We have no problems with windows 7 file search it finds the right document and pulls it up. It reads it how its supposed to be read by the operating system with no problem. We will stick with windows 7 till 10 can read the file scanned in.
