Windows 10 Pro - Bitlocker password prompt on resume from sleep/hibernate

Question

Tuesday, August 2, 2016 1:23 AM

I have been using Windows 10 Pro since the time Windows 10 launched, on my Lenovo A720 which does not have a TPM.

Whenever I reboot, I am brought to a light blue screen with Bitlocker password prompt. I understand that. However, since the past several weeks, I have noticed that the same screen shows up even when the computer resumes from sleep/hibernate. Is this by design? Is there a way to bypass that? Would it even make sense to bypass that?

I administer an office and we used win10 right from the start with bitlocker (with and without TPM). You should always and with no exceptions see the bitlocker preboot authentication screen when you resume from hibernation. You will not see it when resuming from sleep.

I guess you never saw it before, because you did not use hibernation until now.

There is no way to bypass this and it would make no sense.

Hi RPMM,

As Ronald Schilf pointed out, waking up from hibernate will always prompt for password. But waking from sleep shouldn`t prompt for password. Hibernate and sleep mode is different. In Sleep mode, we save contents of hard drive to memory while we save present contents to hard drive in hibernate mode.
 This behavior is be design.

If you get password prompt waking from sleep mode, please ensure the machine is up to date. Try to update the BIOS from the device manufacturer website.
Please note that we have to press "power" button to wake the machine from hibernate. But we could click the "mouse" or "keyboard" (if you haven`t disabled them to wake up the machine) to wake the machine from sleep mode.

Best regards

Thanks. I thought I did not have hibernate on, and I re-checked and it was in fact on. Weird. Something must have happened along the way after applying multiple updates after initial W10 upgrade last year.

I turned it off and I don't get prompted anymore. Thanks again.
