Question

Hello, I have been experiencing random drops on our network at random times with random users. Some days are worse than others. Some times its everyone and sometimes its just a couple users. I was looking though some of our logs and noticed that this error happens around the same time as drops. Could this be causing drops? How to I resolve this error?
The error is: A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the computer that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state.

Hi,
What is the version of your OS?
The error is Event 4319
/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/dd392908(v=ws.10)
CAUSE:There are several possible reasons why this error message may be generated:
- There is a computer on the network with the same name.
- Identical user name logged on to multiple computers.
- Inactive or duplicate names in the WINS database.
- Corruption in the DHCP database.
- Conflicting network adapters in a multihomed computer.
- “ipconfig/all” returns incorrect host name.
Please check it.
RESOLUTION:
- If the IP address is all zeros, have the customer look to see if there are any Windows for Workgroups computers on the network with the same name. Windows for Workgroups computers will sometimes return all zeros for their IP address with this error.
- The user names will register with a <03h> and that will be the name in conflict. Have the user log off of all computers and log back on to just one.
- Check the database to verify there are no duplicate entries.
Best Regards,
Frank

The error we are seeing this on is the main server at the site. It runs Hyper-v with the DNS/DHCP server and it has a domain controller setup on it. The server has 4 NICs one of those has a static IP while the other two are set to DHCP. All four of those IPs look correct. I apologize I don't understand how to get the resolution. Here is what I am confused on.
1. What IP address is all zeros? Those NICs seem to be good.
2. Which user names? which user?
3. Are you talking about the DHCP database?
What if we have duplicate computer names but different IPs is that okay? Do you think this would be causing drops in the network for some users?

Hi,
I mean domain users if you have domain environment
>>What if we have duplicate computer names but different IPs is that okay?
In an Active-Directory environment, the hostname must be unique.
In a Windows WORKGROUP environment, you may give all computers the same hostname
But if you have to address a computer by name, e.g. because the software requires it, then there is no telling which computer actually receives a packet. It's even possible that one packet goes to companyname-client (192.168.0.1) and the next to companyname-client (192.168.0.2). That could cause simple problems like long transmission times, timeouts, disconnects up to serious security problems.

Frank
