TP5(TP4?) Ink And Handwriting Services feature missing

Question

Friday, June 3, 2016 10:16 PM | 1 vote

It seems that in TP5 (also in TP4) Ink and Handwriting services components (files) are actually installed, however Ink and Handwriting Services (InkAndHandwriting) is not listed among the components. This causes any application relaying on this feature to report and error during installation/instantiation. Is there an easy fix?

Hi,

Please ensure that cumulative update for Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 5 (KB3157663) was installed before installing any server roles, features or other products.

Hi Amy,

I verified and my Windows Server 2016 TP5 has latest cumulative update (KB3158987) installed. I had previous version of cumulative update installed when I made my first post (there seems to be a bug in Update history since it claims KB3158987 was installed on 3rd June 2016 and on 7th June 2016, probably on 3rd there was older cumulative update) . Ink And Handwriting Services feature is still missing:

Get-WindowsFeature | Where-Object {$_.Name -like '*ink*'}

returns no results... Looking at the files on the disk drive (C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink) it seem that feature is actually installed. Some applications which relay on this feature fail during installation/instantiation since they determine feature is not installed. There was not mention in the release notes of the TP4 and TP5 in which this feature is no longer present (it was still present in TP3). Please fix this or suggest a workaround.

Thanks for your hint to post on Windows Server General Feedback website, just did that.

Best regards,

   Blaz

Hi Blaz,

Seems like the feature is still in progress to me, the product team would actively monitor and review feedback in forum and the feedback page, thank you for reporting!

Amy

Hi

Are there any updates on this missing *feature*? As I know this 'Ink and Handwriting Services' is default part of Windows Server 2016 TP5, but however, there's no workaround how to launch apps which are relaying on 'Ink and Handwriting Services' as a Windows Server feature. So the questions is : how to run this apps (like Office Online Server) ?

Thanks,

Oleksii

I installed Windows Server 2016 RTM (en_windows_server_2016_x64_dvd_9327751.iso) and do not see the "Ink and Handwriting Services" or "Desktop Experience" features.

Install of Office Online Server was halted because of the missing feature.

Does anyone know if Windows Server 2016 will support OOS (and Ink feature)?  Thank you!

I ran into the same issue today with installing Office Online Server using en_windows_server_2016_x64_dvd_9327751

Had to revert back to 2012 R2 :(

Grrrr

Has anyone found a way around this? We are getting ready to build a new SharePoint 2016 environment and would very much like all of the components to run on Server 2016, however, we cannot get passed the Ink and Handwriting services requirement for the Office Online Server.

Same problem here, first time I have tried to use Server 2016 for something.  Not the best start.

Same thing. Unfortunately, the only supported OS is Windows Server 2012R2, as of TechNet: "Software, hardware, and configuration requirements for Office Online Server" . Pity.

OK so it's been another week since the last post.  I have stood up a POC and stuck here like you all.

The roles missing are

"Application Server"

"Ink and Handwriting"

Anything new?

Looks like it's installed by default but Office Online doesn't know it's there?

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/get-started/getting-started-with-server-with-desktop-experience

"User interface: standard graphical user interface ("Server Graphical Shell"). The Server Graphical Shell includes the new Windows 10 shell. The specific Windows features installed by default with this option are User-Interfaces-Infra, Server-GUI-Shell, Server-GUI-Mgmt-Infra, InkAndHandwritingServices, ServerMediaFoundation and Desktop Experience. While these features do appear in Server Manager in this release, uninstalling them is not supported and they will not be available in future releases."

The feature is no longer an optional component, and is installed by default.  This change broke the check in Office Online and it is incorrectly failing.  This is a known issue and a fix is being worked on

Thanks!

Any idea when this will be available? Have the 2016 server and just want OOS to start.

Any news in this matter? Any updates for OOS on the way?

I had no issues with the ISO released in November

Hello Markus!

Its mean that you had no issues with installing last OOS 2016 release on Windows 2016 server?

Could you confirm that?

Thanks in advance!

I can confirm that latest OOS iso that I used :  "en_office_online_server_last_updated_november_2017_x64_dvd_100181876**" ** did not have any issue with erroring on the InkandHandwritingServices feature.

I had gotten the same errors on try to install the feature in Server 2016, but went ahead and tried running setup and it completed successfully.
