Microsoft Remote Display Adapter offline due to a user-mode driver crash

Question

Wednesday, December 11, 2019 1:59 PM

I have a recently built Windows 10 Enterprise PC, fully updated at this point regarding drivers and Windows Updates.

The PC is on a domain at my company, and has remote desktop enabled.  I am able to login locally and use the PC with no issue.  However, if I try to login remotely using RDP, the first session will work fine.  If I disconnect and then attempt to connect again, it will present the login banner, then a screen showing 'Other User', then the screen goes black and eventually I get a disconnect error on the RDP client.

The PC, in the System Event Log, has an error about the Microsoft Remote Display Adapter being offline due to a user-mode driver crash.

I have tried updating my video drivers (but I doubt this has to do with them).

Has anybody seen this?  How can I fix?

The exact text is:

The device Microsoft Remote Display Adapter (location (unknown)) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash.  Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times.  Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.

Further testing has shown that this has something to do with the AMD Radeon Pro driver software for my AMD W7000 graphics card.  I had installed the 'latest' version (19.Q4.1), however I uninstalled those drivers and tested using Window's default drivers for the video hardware.  This resulted in my issue not occurring anymore.  I tested RDP connections 10 times and never had an issue.

So, I installed the AMD 18.Q4.1 driver (latest of the 18 version train).  Same issue. :(

Something about the real display drivers in the system is causing the RDP display driver to crash, but only on the 2nd (and subsequent) RDP sessions...

HI

1."The PC, in the System Event Log, has an error about the Microsoft Remote Display Adapter being offline due to a user-mode driver crash."
if we enable Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions  on your problematical remote pc win10 enterprise ,will the same problem happen ?

  1. Open the Group Policy Editor: gpedit.msc
  2. Navigate the tree: Computer Configuration -> Administrator Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Remote Session Environment -> Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions
  3. Configure the Policy to be "Enabled"

2." If I disconnect and then attempt to connect again, it will present the login banner, then a screen showing 'Other User',"
2.1 when you use a domain account testa to remote access win10 enterprise then close rdp window ,the session state of testa will go to disconnect.do you use the testa account to remote access win10 to produce your issue or you use testb account to remote access win10 to produce your issue ?

3."Something about the real display drivers in the system is causing the RDP display driver to crash, but only on the 2nd (and subsequent) RDP sessions..."
3.1what's your detail model of your problematical win10 computer ?
3.2is there 2 AMD W7000 video cards installed on issue win10 computer?
3.3can you go to device manager and look the display adapters ,are there Intel HD Graphics and AMD W7000 installed on your problematical win10? like picture

in general ,Dual video CARDS can automatically switch between video CARDS according to the actual situation of the application software.if you set only use AMD video card in win10 environment and not set AMD video card for specified app ,will same problem happen?(right click the win10 desktop and find AMD VISION Engine control center then check if there any setting related this issue)
