Windows 10 changes DNS to 127.7.7.4

Question

Tuesday, August 7, 2018 4:25 PM

I just installed a NEW PC with Win 10 Pro 1803. It has only been on the internet to download updates, anti-virus and known good software.

When i could not connect to the Auto-discover record to configure Outlook 2016, I found that my DNS setting was 127.7.7.4.

I changed to my local DNS server and added Googles DNS as a second. This lasted about 10 minutes, but was long enough to configure Outlook. I am using a Static IP and Manual DNS, but no matter what I put in the DNS fields,it reverts. I added more in the Advance Tab, but it reverts too.

I have Current Trend Micro AV, (Defender or course) and I ran Malwarebytes as a backup check. No issues found. I also run an IP scanner to notify me of odd traffic behavior.

I have searched for anything that shows DNS and 127.7.7.4, but nothing appears. I have access to the internet and to my domain but the PC is not listed in the DNS Server and many devices and PCs do not appear in the PCs Network list.

What is confusing is that everything seems to work, but I have no idea how, as 127.7.7.4 is not a valid location for DNS that I can tell. I think 127.x is just the local PC so it Pings back.

Any assistance or ideas welcome.

Tony

Hi,

If you are willing to connect to domain, you need to enter the IP of DC to the DNS server. Try manually configure the dns server on client and reboot, checking if it will be changed back.

Thanks for your response.

I believe I have found the issue. It appears my IP scanner sets up a Dark Layer Guard with that address and then uses the real DNS settings to pass data. I found this after a review of the registry.

Guess i will need to work with the Vendor on discovery issues.
