VS 2019 "cannot find setup engine instance"

I've been using VS 2019 Enterprise with no problem.  Yesterday I installed the new version of SSMS 18.4.  Now in VS 2019 when I attempted to install and extension but was prompted to update the VS installer first.  OK I ran that which seemed to go OK.  but when continuing with installing the extension I get the error I get the error "cannot find setup engine instance". 

Any help would be great.  thanks.

Welcome to MSDN forum.

According to your description, “cannot find setup engine instance”, the error often means your instances folder is missing or changed.

Did you delete any folder of Visual Studio when you installed SSMS? Please check the path (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Packages\Instances) exists or not.

#1. If you could find the setup instance you want, please try to launch it by manually.

#2. If it doesn’t work, you could open your VS installer and perform the following steps to repair it: More -> Repair

If the issue persists,   I need your help to collect more installation logs so that we can better achieve your issue. Please download and run this collect.exe tool, go to %temp% folder and find the vslogs.zip file, upload it to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link in here.

Hi moondaddy,

If you try to install other extensions, does this error message will popups or not?

Please run the VS installer as administrator and Modify it, check the workload 'Visual Studio Extension development' is selected or not. If not, please select it to install, then test this issue again.

Hi, I have the same problem, and the #2 work for me. I repair it and now I can install the extensions.
