Configure-SMremoting.exe vs Enable-PSRemoting

Question

Monday, April 2, 2018 11:18 AM

Hello!

If an administrator wants to enable  ws-based remote access (for both server manager AND PowerShell!) he/she can do it either by selecting the following checkbox...

... or this command: Configure-SMremoting.exe -Enable

On the other hand, he/she can also use the Enable-PSRemoting/Disable-PSRemoting cmdlets to enable or disable ws-based remote access JUST for the PowerShell. In that case the situation is possible where the option "Enable remote management ..." is CHECKED but the PS-Remoting is disabled due to the execution of the Disable-PSRemoting cmdlet:

Doesn't it look strange that Windows Server keeps displaying the option "Enable remote management..." as checked even when the second part of its explanation (...AND Windows PowerShell remote access to manage this server) does NOT more apply???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hi Michael,
The same behavior is successfully reproduced in our lab test.
As far as I know, PSRemoting is part of WinRM, enven you disable PSRemoting, however, WinRM is still enabled, so the option which you see is also checked.
In addition, based on my understanding, disabling PSRemoting is actually changing the permission on PSRemoting, instead of checking/unchecking the option. Please see:

Hi Wendy,

Yes, I see that disabling PSRemoting in fact disables the access only for the NT Authority\Network, but I think it is not correct to have a single checkbox for the option that consists of the two distinct options, even if one of them is a ~sub-option of the other.

Michael
