White bar on top of Windows Explorer and browser apps on Windows 10

Question

Thursday, September 6, 2018 6:17 AM

We have a few users experiencing graphical issues.

Sometimes they have a white bar on top of their Windows Explorer and their browser apps.

A temporary fix for the browser apps is pressing f11 twice.

But is there a permanent fix?

We are connected to a local domain. (No Azure or something)

I am one of the IT guys here.

Till now 4 of the 100 have that problem.

They are running build 10.0.15063.1266.

Al drivers are up to date.

And it only happen on web browsers and sometimes the file explorer.

An other user just got the same problem.

He is running 10.0.17134.228 (1803)

He is the first with this problem and running the latest build. :(

An user fixed the same issue by changing the resolution on the screen with the white bar to a smaller value then reverting back to the original resolution.

Also, update to the latest build 17134.254.

Yes we found it out to but I'm sorry you can't call that a fix.

Well maybe a temporary one.

But we need a permanent fix.

And why should the latest build (17134.254.) solved the problem?

We have a user experiencing the same issue, we have updated graphics card drivers, tried onbopard graphics verses a dedicated graphics card, updated the OS, performed a clean boot, and no change. We've also uninstalled any third party apps that could be a factor.  It occurs with IE, Edge, and Windows Explorer.

At this point we are running 17134 and the issue still occurs.

There are other posts about the same issue elsewhere.

looking at the linked articles, seems to be various GPU's, but all are dual screen?
When you switch to one Display, then back again: does this remove the bar?
So "Windows + P", "PC Screen Only"
then "Windows + P", "Extend"

Monday, September 17, 2018 5:07 PM

We have only seen the issues with dual screen.
We have not tired the above keybaord commands, but the following items have cleared it.

 - Switching to one display and back will remove the bar.
 - Adjusting the screen resolution will remove th bar.
 - Setting a browser to go full screen and back again will also clear the bar.
 - and of course, a restart will also clear it.

Hi twotriple0

You're right but Microsoft need to tackle this problem, so you don't need to fix it temporary.

There are many users complaining about this problem.

But til now no response of Microsoft...

I have the same problem. Using dockstation and 2 monitors. Installing the last version about display, disabling extension in browser, bu it doesn't solve.

Wednesday, September 19, 2018 6:46 PM

I can only testify that there is no general problem with dual display on Windows 10 1709, as all our developers are running dual screen and I never heard of such a problem.

To those affected by the problem:
in DXDiag: are both of the "Display"s using the same driver?
What is the driver name, version?
What connection type (HDMI,. DVI, ??)
Are both monitors running with the same (native) resolution?
What is the DPI setting?

I am in the exact same boat, 100+ users and only 1/2 have this problem. no spesific software installed on these peoples machines.

I have tried:

Drivers (all of them)

Windows updates (seems to still happen on 1709 and 1803)

New hardware (Literally a new PC built from the ground up)

This is 100% some sort of software issue, i have only found one constant and that is Coact online, i was wondering what online "software" do you guys use? because we are thinking it is coact online that is the culprit and is causing problems maybe with some runtime something or other causing the glitch with programs outside of the web browser.

What we use only on the users that have the problem:

Coact online

Jira

Gov.uk companies-house (doubt its this one)

I can only testify that there is no general problem with dual display on Windows 10 1709, as all our developers are running dual screen and I never heard of such a problem.

Because you have no issues, it is not a general problem?

Why do many other users (from all around the world) have this issue?

Some of our problem computers are connected with a combination of VGA, DVI and displayport.

Some of the problem computers have 2 the same screens and some have 1 smaller squared screen.

english is not my first language, so I apologized that I used  "not a general problem" when I meant: "not all users are affected".
I obviously misunderstood the definition of "general" in my dictionary.
As your knowledge of the english language is better than mine: what dictionary do you recommend?

Your translation wasn't wrong :)

But I thought you where a Microsoft employee with a bad excuse.

English isn't my first language to (Dutch is)

Glad to here there is some office with no troubles.

Little bit jealous :)

Hi Kate,

The next time it appears I will send a screenshot.

Only the problem is that it doesn't happen all days.

Tuesday, October 2, 2018 4:52 AM

i also get the same issue on server 2016 / terminal server users

server 2016 1607

Tuesday, October 2, 2018 4:54 AM

my users have dual screens / using thin clients to connect to terminal server 2016 (which is a hyper v server)

this basically rules out any hardware related and thus means it is a windows 10 / 2016 issue

Tuesday, October 2, 2018 11:59 AM

Here you have screenshot how it is look like.

Thanks for posting that link with images.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix it

Here is a screenshot of one of our computers

Thursday, October 11, 2018 7:20 AM

Today a colleague told me he faced the issue again.

Sometimes 4 times a day.

We already reinstalled the PC but the issue came back.

If I'm looking through the forums I see that all the users with this issue uses 2 screens.

Does anyone (especially Microsoft) have any leads?

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 2:06 PM

Our pc's are running Intel Core i5-3470S CPU @ 2.90GHz

alle of the issue pc's are Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge72.

Today a colleague told me she had this issue again.

But this time on the bottom of the screen

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 1:32 PM

Hello,

Thanks, pressing F11 does seem to temporarily resolve the rendering issue for Browsers (IE11, Edge and Chrome).  The Windows explorer issues seems to require a reboot or disabling/enabling the second monitor.

At the moment we only have a single supported user reporting this issue, hardware/software specs are as below.

HP EliteDesk 800 G2 SFF (P1G92ET)

  • Intel Core i7-6700
  • 16GB Memory
  • 256GB Samsung SSD
  • NVIDIA GeFroce GT 730 PCIe Card (HP part number approved for this computer)
  • integrated Intel I219-LM LAN Adapter
  • integrated Realtek HD Audio
  • Windows 10 Pro 1803 (Build 17134.345)
  • 2 x HP Compaq LA2405wg LCD Monitors

The machine has a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 attached and a Plantronics C320-M headset, not sure that this has any relevance.  We have several other users with identical hardware and they are not facing the same issue so its very strange!  Almost all the desktops that we support have dual display including this problematic machine.

Please can you share the specs of the machines with this issue so that we can try and look for any common factors.

Thanks

Where I work we noticed this start happening early October 2018.  We are on a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 10 of various builds and update status, not on exactly same hardware, so can't narrow it down very well.

The issue would not affect all users of the workstation.

We inspected / tried all the suggestions found on various forums to no avail.

The only way we've found to resolve is to delete the user profile of the affected user.  (Beware depending on your environment there may be items you need to backup for the user!)

Time will tell whether (in our environment) this is a "permanent" fix and whether we find or narrow down a possible cause.

Hope this helps.

Thursday, November 22, 2018 9:41 PM

it did not work here, we change, screens, notebooks, drivers, and more.

Monday, November 26, 2018 6:58 PM

Since this is a common issue with multiple monitor setups, I think the issue is due to scaling between them. Here's what I did to resolve the issue:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Click on Display
  • Toggle between the monitors to make sure the resolution is the same
  • If yes, make sure the "Change the size of text, apps, and other items" is the same for both monitors. ie. 100%, 125%, 150%, etc.

Hope this works for others.

Saturday, December 1, 2018 7:16 AM

This is not a solution. As others have stated here - this happens even on brand new setups with identical monitor settings (scaling etc).

Tuesday, January 15, 2019 6:40 PM

any idea?

Friday, January 18, 2019 4:07 PM

Any news we are starting to have same issue on multiple computers even after format

Saturday, January 19, 2019 12:02 AM

I have the same issue but with different machines. Dell hardware Latitude 5491, 7390, Precision 5280. Windows 10 1803 Enterprise edition all are dual screen setup.

Hope there's a fix soon.

Monday, February 11, 2019 11:15 AM

We have another client experiencing this issue, brand new HP Elite 800 G4 running Windows 10 (1809) and already the user is having this issue with Web Browsers (i.e. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge).  This computer is also a dual screen setup (2 x Full HD Monitors) driven by a HP Branded Nvidia GeForce GT 730 (latest drivers).  Reboot resolves the issue temporarily, its annoying that Microsoft still don't seem to have a fix for this issue.

Wednesday, February 13, 2019 7:40 AM

There are many threads describing this issue.

But Microsoft is doing nothing. :(

Only some Moderators are giving some temporary fixes we already know.

Monday, March 25, 2019 3:22 PM

Dear Microsoft,

This problem went away without explanation or some of our users, and last week it came back.  The machine was recently updated Windows 10-1809, and in about a month the issues were reported again. Multiple times a day, this screen issue occurs.  These "temporary fixes," while appreciated, are not a substitute for a firm understanding and response from Microsoft.  A bulletin to explain the behavior or contributing factors would be helpful so we can make decisions to help avoid issues while an update or hotfixis being prepared.

The connected threads show issues across several different builds of Windows 10 and even occurring on Server 2016 RDS sessions. There is no other common thread.  Different graphics cards, different graphic card vendors, different software, and of course the issue occurs using Edge as well.

We've been dealing with this issue since JULY 2018, and have participated in threads online, attempted to open tickets with Microsoft since this was caused by an update, and even replaced whole computers to remedy the issue, and it continues.

Thursday, May 30, 2019 4:56 PM

Microsoft... we have the same issue and no solution, please advise.

Monday, July 8, 2019 9:02 PM

Same problem here. Windows 10 Enterprise Build 1803. Compilation 17134.829.

Dual screen VGA with HDMI. NVIDIA GT 220.

Still waiting the fix. Thanks

Hey

This has been a long running problem that I know how to fix - at least on Dells and maybe others with integrated Intel graphics.

Right click your desktop, select Intel Graphics Options (cant remember exact wording, its a blue app)

Choose Display

There will be a Scaling option - set that to Scale Full Screen on any monitors

That should sort it out for you

However, this is now happening on HPs, without Intel graphics options, if anyone can figure it out for HPs, please let me know!

I have battled this issue for nearly a year now. Two cases have been opened with Microsoft, and I just received word from Microsoft that this is in fact a bug in Windows, with no ETA on a fix.

All "solutions" provided here and elsewhere should be considered workarounds, and are only temporary from my experience.

Sunday, September 22, 2019 1:28 PM

Thank you for sharing your findings
and glad/sad to see that Microsoft at least sees it as bug)

I read somewhere else that people where pointing to intel drivers. It's not an Intel driver issue since my troubles began when using the original MS Video driver. (On an Asrock Intel H310 using 2 24"monitors). I then installed the latest Intel video drivers but the issue remained the same.

I hope we consolidate the answers here since there are different threads on other MS Forums. I created a case through the feedback hub hoping against all odds that Microsoft will fix this issue sooner rather then later. (a year? Microsoft, come on already, put your backs into it..)

Sunday, September 22, 2019 2:46 PM

As you now Are running Intel drivers: did you change the scaling options?

Monday, September 23, 2019 8:39 PM

The newest version of the Intel software does not have that scale full screen option.
(also no override app settings that I was able to find)

Wednesday, October 9, 2019 2:22 PM

@Laearo This worked for me. Thank you!

Sunday, October 27, 2019 11:08 PM

Thanks Laearo.

This suggestion was spot on! If you locate the registry entries and files in the user profile that relate to these settings and you clear them, this issue also goes away.

This issue is also 'resolved' with a new profile, hence why this setting change works.

A driver update would be suggested and may resolve this problem permanently.

Friday, January 17, 2020 6:11 PM

This is happening for our company as well, however our users are running AMD processors and integrated graphics. Workarounds that have worked for us include:

Toggling full-screen in affected program.

Toggling monitor resolution.

Windows Key + Shift + Left/Right Arrow to move window to other screen.

Taking affected program out of full screen mode.

NOTE: These are only workarounds, not solutions.

All of the computers that are experiencing the issue have identical hardware and Windows 10 build, but the monitors are different on all of them.

Friday, January 17, 2020 7:02 PM

@so nob: you need to give more info:

  • affected programs
    _ GPU type
  • driver version
  • Windows build number

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 11:30 PM

Sorry I didn't get notified of your comment.

It happens in all the above mentioned programs for us. Chrome, Internet Explorer 11, Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Windows Explorer.

The processor is AMD Ryzen 5 3400G

graphics is: Integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 - Driver version: 26.20.11028.0

Windows 10 1909 18363.657

We currently have one client office that has been experiencing this issue for more than 6 months. I have yet to find a solution and have reinstalled windows on the machines multiple times just to see it resurface a couple of weeks later. This office has 3 HP mini workstations and 2 dell laptops (using docking stations), and a microsoft surface laptop that are all experiencing the issue.

Same problem

W10 enterprise 1909 + HP prodesk 600 g5

duel screen with onboard grafics card connected with Display port

Intel video drivers 26.20.100.7263 & bios Q07

Duel screens are Elitedisplay E273q but also with 24 inch hp screens.

Another Temp sollutions is to press CTRL+SHIFT+WINDOWS+B to reset the problem.

for Intel drivers, try:

- Right click desktop,

- Go to Intel HD Graphics settings

- Select Display

- Then choose the option Scale Full Screen.

- Make sure the option Override Application Settings has the checkbox marked.

Wednesday, July 29, 2020 1:02 PM

Has there been any movement on this issue from Microsoft?  This thread stops in April of 2020, but I am still having this issue.
