Question

Hello. I recently did some Windows updates to my home laptop (Win 10, x86). I know that one update was "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803." Now, the Windows Defender icon in my systray has a red X on it, with text of 'Actions needed." When I open Windows Defender, in the "Virus & threat protection" section it reads, "Your Virus & threat protection is managed by your organization." Screenshot. There are no other options there. This was not the case before I did the updates. How can I resolve this? This is not a work computer--it is my personal computer.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Check the Registry below.
1.Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and go to the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
2.Export the branch to a REG file. Then, right-click the “Windows Defender” key and choose Delete.
3. Similarly, backup and delete the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Advanced Threat Protection
Restart Windows.

Hello,
Are you using any third-party antivirus program? Have you configured any Group Policy related to Windows Defender?

Hi, thanks for the reply. No, I do not have any third party antivirus programs installed. And I don't think I have configured any Group Policy at all, much less related to Windows Defender. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply.
OK I followed your regedit instructions. When I restarted, Windows Defender-->Virus & threat protection had changed to read, 'Threat service has stopped. Restart it now.' I clicked 'Restart now,' then Win Defender seemed to start without issue. So we can consider this resolved--thanks!
