Question

Wednesday, June 29, 2016 2:36 PM

Hi,

I have a problem downloading optional items of visual studio 2015 enterprise edition update 3. I already downloaded 11 GB with /layout switch. But when installer started to download optional items download speed fall to 5-6 KB/sec. Now size of downloaded items reached to 16.6 GB and still there is a big penalty on download speed. Is there anyone who knows how much gigabytes I have to do download to finish all of this setup. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

As far as I know, the offline file size is 7.2 GB and the hardware requirements are 10 GB for available hard disk space

this for the regular installation but if you are going to install all the features, the setup might require up to 30 GB.

I recommend if you download and install only the required components then install the optional features later when needed to make sure that the download and setup is no interrupted. also try to use an internet download manager that allows you to pause and continue downloads at anytime.

Check this FAQ

Why is my setup taking so long / hanging partway through? What’s going on?

In VS 2015 you can chose to configure your setup to only install the tools you want, which makes the install lighter and faster. If you chose to do a full installation though, Visual Studio is a pretty big product and will take over 30GB of disk space after installation and it installs a lot of third party software including the Android SDK, the Java Developer Kit, and the Windows and Android emulators. The progress indicator during installation of the third-party software doesn’t advance, but the software is usually being installed — that’s a bug we’re going to fix. On a slow connection in particular, download can take a very long time or even time out. If setup doesn’t complete successfully, try the ISO image.

This is the ISO image of VS Enterprise Update 3

You can check system requirements  at https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/visual-studio-2015-system-requirements-vs.aspx#2

Dear hasongun,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

As Mahmound said, the complete installation of VS will take a huge space on your computer. If you current download speed is not fast, I recommend you download a healthy ISO file and use it to install. You can choose the default installation and the Default installation will often be smaller and install faster than a Custom installation. You can install any of the custom components at a later time if you don't select them during the initial setup. Go to Control Panel--Programs and Features and right-click the VS enterprise with update 3 and select Change-Modify, then check the components that you need and install them.

>>Now size of downloaded items reached to 16.6 GB and still there is a big penalty on download speed. Is there anyone who knows how much gigabytes I have to do download to finish all of this setup.

I also tried to download the offline installer of VS enterprise 2015 with update 3 on my local, it already reached 20.5GB and still in progress, please see the following screenshot:

If I completed this action, I will update the total size of the offline installer package in here.

Best regards,

Sara

Dear Sara,

Thank you for your replay. After my download size reached to 17 GB I tried to install vs with all options turned on and installer reported that it requires totally 55 GB disk space on all drives. Therefore I assume all the download of installer will occupy at least 22-25 GB disk space which confirm your experience. I hope It would not take too much time because of low download speed. Actually I can not understand why download speed fall to 8-10 KB/sec after installer started to download optional items which it was about 800-900KB/sec before this point.

Dear Mahmoud,

Thank you for reply. As I stated in my question I want to download full offline installer of VS Enterprise with optional items. Because I have an open source project which can not be compiled with regular installation. So I'll try to compile it with trial of enterprise version and I plan to add items to installation when project requires them. I recently figured out that full installation will occupy at least 55 GB disk space. So I assume the installer requires more than 7.2 GB in zipped form.

Dear hasongun,

Thank you for your update.

I have checked my downloading of VS enterprise with update 3 and it is completed successfully. The size of the total offline installer is 22.5GB, please see the following screenshot:

BTW, the Android SDK does not support an offline installation experience. If you install Android SDK Setup items on a computer that is not connected to the internet, the installation might fail. For more information, see the "Troubleshooting an offline installation" section in this topic. What's more, please see here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt706497.aspx, so it is make sense that if you directly check all options in VS installer, the requirement of the disk space is bigger than the offline installer.

*>>Actually I can not understand why download speed fall to 8-10 KB/sec after installer started to download optional items which it was about 800-900KB/sec before this point.  *

I guess the optional items includes lots of the components from the 3rd Party and I also spent over 7 hours at least to complete the downloading of the optional items, so it is looks like reasonable for the slow speed on your side.

Sara

Dear Sara,

I am sorry for late replay. I have been in the field for a while and I hadn't got access to any network. I really appreciate for your update. As I stated earlier my download speed was actually very low for optional components and your message will help me to guess the time I need to finish download. Thank you for your time and support.

I updated my VS 2015 today; it has stopped working. I thought I could fix it by going to control panel but it isn't there. I looked for shortcuts in the start menu and there are not any for the IDE.oked in the program directory and found devenv.exe but it will not launch. I re-booted but it remains broken. So I am downloading what appears to be the latest ISO and will have to re-install from scratch. Your update process broke it. I thought I could try to repair it from Control Panel but VS 2015 is not there anymore. 2016-10-20

Hi bruce,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Refer to your description, your issue is different with the original thread, I recommend you create a new thread for your installation issue and it will help us to research and trace your issue, thank you for your understanding.

BTW, to analysis the detail error message of the failed installation, you need to use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder, then upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link in your new thread.
