Excel 2016 crashing with 0XC0000005 exception when trying to open Microsoft query (.dqy) file

Question

Just this week my users started experiencing problems opening Microsoft Query .dqy files which we've used for years to query our DB2 database. The query starts by prompting for starting and ending dates to establish a date range filter for the query.

This problem is happening on both Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 workstations and it occurs with every .dqy file we try to open/launch.

The problem manifests itself by displaying the following error message any time someone tries to open a .dqy file: "Microsoft Excel has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I found the corresponding message in Event Viewer as a result of this crash:

I've tried a number of recommendations I've found on the web, tweaking Add-In and Trust Center settings in Excel - nothing worked - until today, when I rolled back Office 365 to version 16.0.7967.2161 on a Windows 10 computer.

Please note - my users insist this problem was not happening last week. I checked another computer which hasn't had it's Office updated yet (it is using version 1707 (Build 8326.2076)) and the user was able to launch and use .dqy files on her computer, so this is the version I will be rolling back to where necessary for users who use the .dqy files.

Is there a better, more permanent fix for this problem?

Rolling back to a previous version fixed my problem - for now - until Microsoft recognizes and fixes this bug.

Note: I upgraded my Office 2016 to Version 1708 (Build 8431.2094) and this bug still exists - Excel is still crashing when trying to open .dqy files.

So, to be clear - there is no problem opening .dqy files with Excel version 1707 (Build 8326.2076), but there is a problem with 1708 (8431.2079) and 1708 (8431.2094).
