Published apps on Microsoft Remote Desktop App stuck on connecting on Windows tablet but works using the iOS Remote Desktop app

Question

Friday, October 4, 2019 1:56 AM

Hi, we have been using Windows Remote Desktop App (latest ver. 10.1.1107.0) for more than a year now to connect remotely to our published apps on our Server 2016 remote desktop server.  We use a remote desktop gateway and an ISA as the gateway server.  Before we changed to the Windows tablets, our users were using the iOs version of the remote desktop on their iPads and with the same setup for a few years.  And for almost 3 weeks now, it has not been working, when the users try to launch a published app under remote resources in the app, it would just be stuck at "connecting" and you have to close the window to exit from it and we'll get the error "couldn't connect. something went wrong when we tried to connect. if this keeps happening, ask your admin or tech support for help."

It's possible that it may be a Windows update or a remote desktop app update that caused it to fail which I can't figure out and can't find any other reports on the web yet.  The surprising thing is when I tried it on the iPad and an iPhone with the Remote Desktop App (version 8.1.42), it's still working and I can launch and use the published apps.  Currently, our users are using the old remote desktop connection program with the rdgateway settings and it has been frustrating for them as it's easier to just open the remote desktop app and click the published app and most of them are  not tech savvy.

Has anyone encountered this issue and found a solution for it?  Hopefully someone from Microsoft has a solution for it.

Thank you.

Hi Andy,

Please see the responses below.

1. Win Version 1903 (Build 18362.388)

2. The tablets are mostly Lenovo Miix 510 & 520s but have also tested on a MS Surface tablet, a HP ProBook 450 G3 laptop & Lenovo V110 laptop with the same problem.

3. I can't really pinpoint the exact timing when it happened but one of the users reported on the 2nd week of Sept that he can't use the remote app then I verified it on my end that it wasn't working so it's affecting all the computer and not just one tablet.  About 30+ users have been using the Remote Desktop App for at least a year now when their iPads was changed to the Miix tablets.  They were also using the Remote Desktop App on their iPads.

4.1 Remote Desktop connection version 10.0.18362

4.2 Yes, remote desktop connection is working but not the Remote Desktop App from MS Store.

Btw, just checked now on a laptop with the old Windows version 1803 (Build 17134.165) and the Remote Desktop app is also not working.

HI

5 did your problematical computer added in the same AD domain as session host server ?

6 from your description ,you can open remoteapp rdp file directly but you can't use it to remote access session host server ,is it true ?
so you are using remote desktop connection and open rdp file like picture 1 ?

7 Are you using below policy to deploy remoteapp to windows client
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\RemoteApp and Desktop Connections Specify default connection URL

8 how end domain user get the .rdp file ? Downloading from rdweb web site (https://rdweb.mydomain.com/rdweb) or other method ?

9 from trying to double click the .rdp file to waiting "connect" response ,is there more related log about this issue ?

Hi Andy, please see below.

5.  No, we don't join the computers to On-Prem AD.

6. We can use the .RDC file to access the published app from the remote access session server so we don't have any issues using the .RDC file.  It's basically the Remote Desktop App from MS Store that we're having issues with.

7. No, it's already installed on the tablets by default, we just update the apps via the MS Store.

8. For the end users, we just save the RDP file on a folder on the C: drive and just add a desktop shortcut for them before issuing the tablets.  Btw, we also tried to access via RDweb on the browser and it works fine because it uses RDC.

  1. Checked both logs on the a test client and the RD server and did not find any errors or anything unusual.

HI
"it's already installed on the tablets by default, we just update the apps via the MS Store."
for your answer 5,I am confuse it.
10 could you please share the information about how can i use Microsoft remote desktop app from windows store to access the rdp file to reproduce your issue ?
I have installed rdcb ,rdweb,rdsh with w2012 system and win10 vm .
on win10 client ,from the picture, i need to add webfeed URL to add remoteapp resource.https://rds1.mydomain.local/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx.

11  we can use below link method to verify our technet forum account so that we can post picture and website link.

Hi Andy,

What I meant was we don't deploy the Remote Desktop App thru group policy as it's already installed on the tablets, if it's not installed, we just download the Microsoft Remote DEsktop from MS Store which is the same as your screenshot of the app.

In the Remote Desktop app, you can click on the Add option on top then select Remote resources and then just enter the URL of the feed.  For us it's something like http://rdgateway.domainname/RDweb/feed/webfeed.aspx and then once we enter the credentials, we can see the published apps from the RD server under work resources.  We do have an ISA server that will do the security authentication to the RD server via a digital certificate so the users can access it remotely as they work offsite and on other cities.

Btw, I have posted on the given link and just waiting for my account to be verified.

Thanks.

HI
12 from description ,you can add the webfeed url successfully in remote desktop app but you can not open remoteapp in work resource on windows tablet(or windows pc) of workgroup, like picture ,is it ture ?
13 If you use remote desktop app on your windows tablet in internal network ,will you still not open remoteapp in work recources  ?
14 is there any way we can set ISA temporarily and let user bypass the ISA to open the app on work resources? it will check if ISA cause your issue .
15 if you turn off firewall temporarily on windows tablet ,will you also can not open remoteapp (like calculator) on remote desktop app like picture ?
16 are build -in apps(like calculator ,paint etc) also can not be opened or only specified remoteapp can not be open in work resources?

Hi Andy,

Please see below.

12. Yes, we can add the webfeed URL in Remote Desktop App but we do not use the RemoteApp in work resources, we just use the published apps from the RD server just like the image below. From the image, we just publish our in-house app and also an IBM program.

The connection that works is when they just use the RDC file that is saved on their desktop as shown below.

13. It works when we use the Remote Desktop App to connect to our published app under work resources  in the internal network.

14. No we cannot bypass the ISA Server as it's the security authenticator & gateway so they can access it from an external network.  Just to remind you, the Remote Desktop App from the iOS store works when I tested it from an iPhone and also an iPad from an external network, and that goes through the ISA server.

For 15 & 16, I'll try to publish some built in apps like calculator, etc just like you said as we don't have those apps published then I'll let you know the results.

Hi,

Just published the calculator & paint on the RD server and turned off the Windows Firewall and cannot access both the calculator and paint.  It's also stuck at connecting.  There's no way we can downgrade the version of an MS Store app, is that correct?

Thursday, October 17, 2019 10:04 AM

HI

18 There's no way we can downgrade the version of an MS Store app, is that correct?
for your answer 13,we have downgraded current issue to your "the ISA Server as it's the security authenticator & gateway

i am not sure if your the workflow by using Remote Desktop App from MS store like below.
we need to check the workflow and port demand of Remote Desktop App by using network monitor or wireshark.

for external network:
Remote Desktop App --> router -->RDweb url -->ISA --> RDgateway-->RDCB-->RDSH
for internal network:
Remote Desktop App --> RDweb url --> RDgateway-->RDCB-->RDSH

for check the port demand of window store Remote Desktop,in internal network, we can open network monitor or wireshark on problematical windows computer then open the notepad remoteapp in work source after using the notepad successfullly ,we can stop and save the network file 1.

in external network, we can open network monitor or wireshark on problematical windows computer then open the notepad remoteapp in work source after using the notepad fail ,we can stop and save the network file 2.

try to compare the difference between network file 1 and network file 2 and check if we can find some thread ?

for your answer 14,
Remote Desktop App from the iOS store and Remote Desktop App from window store, they are different app developed on different os platform.Remote Desktop App from window store are different from remote desktop connection.

Hi Andy,

Yes, that's correct, I've been looking around and haven't found any yet regarding downgrading the version of the RD app.

I've also tried running Network monitor as you suggested and tried launching the notepad but honestly, I don't really don't know what I'm looking for.

Below is a network monitor capture that I opened in Wireshark for the external connection.

RJN10,

We are seeing this exact issue on external clients. Were you able to make any progress with troubleshooting this?

Launching via RDWeb Access works fine, no issues at all, however some Windows 10 Remote Desktop App users are getting hooked up to the store, can see the apps and desktops list, but when launching it just sits at 'connecting'. There are a few clients that are okay though (my laptop for example), but most home users are reporting it just sits there at connecting.

We aren't seeing any event log errors.

My laptop (client 10.1.1195.0) goes through connecting > do you want to accept the certificate > certificate name discrepancy > connected

Other users just sit at connecting and never progress further.

We are not seeing any issues with Android, iOS or Mac clients. Using a .rdp file works fine. Like you, it is just the Windows 10 app.

Server back-end in this case is Windows Server 2016, fully patched.

Most of these users are pulling the RD Client from the Windows Store for the first time, so their home computers are 'clean'.
