Start menu tiles appear blank

Question

Friday, August 17, 2018 1:31 PM

I had most of the tiles on my Start menu go blank recently and can't get the icons to reappear.  The icon text is correct and the program launches fine, but no icon.  Here are some of the things I've tried that didn't work:

  • Tried deleting icon cache by deleting the contents of %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h4txyewy\TempState\
  • Tried deleting icon cache by deleting %userprofile%\AppData\Local\iconcache.db
  • Tried resizing the icon
  • Tried unpinning the tile, then re-pinning it
  • Tried switching between full-screen Start menu and normal

No luck so far.  I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise 1709.  TIA if anyone can recommend next steps, cheers!

Thank Momominta.  I've actually followed the suggestion in that article, it's bullet #1 on my list.  And yes, I terminated explorer.exe and ShellExperienceHost.exe first.

Unfortunately unpinning the tile doesn't work, and Microsoft has discontinued the Start Menu Troubleshooter.  :\

Hi,

Does the issue occur with another user account?

Or we could try to create a new user account to check the issue again.

Try to update to the latest system version Windows 10 1803 to check if the issue persists.

Bests,

You don't need to repair the image!!  You just need to rebuild the icon cache.  For whatever reason, it corrupts frequently (Like every file on windows...-looking at you NTUser.DAT that killed my whole pc after an update.  It's trivial to rebuild.  I can't remember the specific command but I'm sure google does. No guarantees, but it fits the symptoms a little bit and it's quick and easy.  Might also be worth checking to see there's not a start menu cache location as well.  See if there's a hidden file in the start menu folder

If you need to rebuild the Icon cache, Open File Explorer > Folder Options > Views to show Hidden System Files. Next, go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local folder and delete the hidden IconCache.db file. Reboot. This action will purge and rebuild the icon cacheSep 25, 2013

removing the file IconCache.db worked for me. Thanks
